We've got an election on Tuesday, and it might not go so well. Here's what to expect on DU.
As you all know, we've got an election on Tuesday and there's a good chance that the results are not going to be good for Democrats. If somehow we hold on to both houses of Congress, then I think we'll have a good night here on DU and the aftermath will be (for the most part) fine. We've been very lucky in that we haven't had to deal with a bad election since 2004.

But if we lose one (or God forbid both) houses of Congress, things are likely to get pretty ugly here on DU for a few days. I wish that weren't the case, but I think it's probably inevitable. Especially considering how friendly DU has been this past year. (That's sarcasm.)

So, depending on what happens, here's what I think you can can expect...

1. Everyone needs to GET OUT AND VOTE.
I know that I have no power to make anyone actually get to the polls. But if you don't, imagine me sending very rude thoughts over the intertubes at you. We've talked and talked and talked about this election, and I know some DUers are disappointed with President Obama and the Democrats in Congress. BUT STILL, now is the time when your actions actually matter. You can come to DU and complain about Democrats all you like and post the most absurd baseless hyperbole. That's fine -- you got caught up in the moment and you said some stuff you really didn't believe. But everyone here is smart enough to know that ELECTIONS MATTER, and WHO CONTROLS CONGRESS matters, and WHO CONTROLS ELECTIVE OFFICES ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY matters. I am confident that you will all do the right thing, as long as you GET OUT AND VOTE.

2. After you're done voting, come here and hang out with your DU friends (and DU frenemies).
We're all in this together. We win together, or we lose together. We all know that More Democrats = More Progress, and More Republicans = More Garbage. On Tuesday, we are all rooting for the same team.

I hope everyone will check in and let us know when you have voted. You can even dress up with one of these cool "I voted" avatars, like the one I'm wearing right now. (I haven't voted yet this year. I just never took it off after voting for President Obama in 2008. Man, that was the best.)

3. We'll probably get a lot of traffic to our site on Tuesday and Wednesday, which may affect your ability to get to the site.
If necessary, we may have to turn off certain site functions so we don't bog down our servers. This will help speed up load times, if they are lagging. If we do turn off certain functions, there will be an announcement posted on the top right corner of the Latest Page explaining what we have done. Don't be alarmed.

4. If people start posting a lot of divisive garbage, we may dump all of it into one GD forum.
On Tuesday evening, if things start getting ugly, we are going to enforce a hard split between the two General Discussion forums. We have done this in the past, including during the aftermath of the disappointing 2004 election, and it works pretty well. The General Discussion forum would be designated as the support forum, and the General Discussion: Presidency forum would be designated as the infighting forum. Their names would be changed to reflect their purpose. (At this point we haven't figured out what we're going to call them or exactly how we are going to define the split, but we'll figure it out before Tuesday night.) Whenever someone clicks "post" in either GD forum, they will be presented with an interrupt page directing them to post their topic in whichever forum is more appropriate.

You will be able to hide threads from the GD: Infighting forum from their "Options" page. This way, you can make the infighting disappear! Just go to Options > Edit your preferences > Set "Hide General Discussion: Presidential from the Latest page?" to Yes > Click "Update."

If anyone posts a divisive infighting topic in the GD: Support forum, the moderators will move the thread into the GD: Infighting forum. The moderators have the sole authority to decide which threads are divisive.

5. If you want the Democrats to lose, GO AWAY.
I fully expect that there may be lots of finger-pointing and "I told you so" posts, and as much as I don't like it I understand it is going to happen. That's fine. But if anyone seems a little too gleeful that the Democrats lost and the Republicans won, we're not going to cut you a great deal of slack. If you want to celebrate a Republican victory, take it to Free Republic.

I think that's everything. Fingers crossed, hoping for the best.

GO DEMS!

204. It's Pravdu!
Though I've been censored several times on DU, this stacking of the post-election deck is laughable and demands a response. The word 'divisive' is used here a lot, apparently the liberal version of the positive thinking cult's 'negative,' but I'll run the risk.

I don't want Democrats to lose. I want them to start respecting their base, public opinion, international law, and the environment. I want them to try something other than milquetoast half-measures designed to placate people who hate their guts anyway. I want them to make timely, effective policy that improves the lives of average people. Achieve these and cringe-fests like the 2010 mid-terms will be a thing of the past.

Bill Maher described the teabaggers' revolt against the Republican Party as "They're the chick they love to screw, but won't bring out in public." So too with orthodox, small-tent liberals who want votes but no input or critical thinking. If the Democratic Party loses big tomorrow, it once again won't have anyone else to blame.

See you the day after. Maybe there will be some fight in y'all then.

After you're done voting, go to the campaign office of the candidate of your choice and help get someone ELSE to vote. And then do it again. My wife and I live in NY but will be down in Florida to help a candidate in a very risky seat. If you can afford to take a day off from work, now's the time to do it.

12. Thanks for thinking about this in advance.
I've been thinking about it, too, and have made a firm decision. I'm going to stay completely away from any fighting over these results. They will be whatever they are. I can't do anything about the results after the polls close, so the end of this election begins an entirely new period, as far as I'm concerned.

My comments on Wednesday are going to be about the victories, not the defeats. I'm going to try very hard to focus on whatever positive results come out of the elections. Then, after a bit of time goes by, I'll be interested in talking about real things we can do to repair any damage the election has caused.

I've been out trying to GOTV in the past couple of months. I think I've been successful, but I live in a strongly Democratic district and precinct. I know that many other DUers have also been out trying to get people to the polls to vote for Democrats in Congressional races, Senate races, and state and local elections as well. A lot of work has gone into these efforts and everyone who participated is due a big round of applause. Recriminations aren't really the appropriate response for those people who have worked hard on campaigns.

I'm an optimist, but not a blind one. It's clear that there are going to be disappointments, along with some surprising victories, I hope. It's going to take some time to sort things out, figure out the reasons for both, and see how the lessons can be translated into future victories. So, a bit of thinking time will probably be more useful than a bunch of arguments.

If we give it a few days before resuming the usual battles, I think it would give us all a chance to digest whatever results we end up with. So, I'm pledging to do just that and to keep negative thoughts and frustrations to myself for a while. It'll probably be better for my blood pressure, too.

it's pretty damn demoralizing to get kicked in the head by wingnuts IRL, then come here to commiserate & for moral support, & find red state bashing (esp. Texas & I guess this year Florida is in the mix too) going on here. It's enough to make you wonder why you even bother sometimes, if you can't even find acceptance & support FROM YOUR OWN PARTY.

Thanks.

Just kidding. I hope we all can be peaceful and supportive over the next couple days.

I hope for our country's sake that our losses will be minimal. Of course I hope we lose nothing.

Voting tomorrow around 2. Taking mom with me. Remind my kids of what they must do and will sit back, wait for MSNBC's liberal lineup to come on and hang out at DU.

55. I doubt many here actually want to see Democrats lose
and Republicans win. Aside from outright trolls

The 'gleefulness' would more likely be 'I told you so' conviction

After years of watching the Democratic party move further and further to the right, people on the left are susceptible to finger-pointing when shit backfires.

There are a number of people openly advocating a primary challenger for Obama in 2012 on a recent thread in GD: P. It had nothing to do with polling data; these people have been hoping for this for a while.

93. I understand that it can be a hot topic,
but (and no snark here) I honestly don't understand how it would be a rule violation. If someone is advocating for a non-Democrat in general election I get it, but when it's Dem against Dem in a primary I don't see that as breaking the rules here. Of course, I may very well have missed a meltdown that led to this being seen as a DU rule violation.

79. I will probably be here for a while tonight,
But after that I will not be back until Wednesday....My Tuesday is pretty busy...7:00AM, vote and begin to do "poll checking" (keeping track of those who have voted in my precinct for any needed GOTV calls or visits later in the day). 11:00AM - a 1 hour break. 12:00NOON - Local Dem co-ordinated campaign office for some GOTV calls. 4:00PM, or thereabouts, back to a polling place for visibility. Then probably back to the campaign office for a while. 8:00PM, to a nearby Town Hall to await the vote counts and call them into a candidate's campaign manager.

I will be attending that candidate's election night party for a while (he's running for County Sheriff, but probably going to lose) before going to Congressman John Tierney's party to celebrate his expected re-election........It will be a long night, though, as we wait for word on results for Governor Deval Patrick, for Auditor, for Treasurer, and our local State Reps.....

Like I said...busy, busy day.

If I don't see you all tonight - Good luck everyone - and I'll see you all sometime Wednesday...!!!!

PLEASE, PLEASE VOTE!!!!!!!

199. Remember .... T-baggers= KOCH BROS. freight train run out of a PR firm ......
The right wing can only rise on political violence -- stolen elections -- and lies.

Everything the right wing does is FUNDED by them -- from think tanks to Christian

Coalition which was given start-up funding by the GOP!

Richard Scaife financed Dobson's group -- and other wealthy right wingers financed Bauer's org.

CIA, which has raised money from any right wing source, including KKK and John Birch Society,

funded right wing Congressmen -- two mentioned are Sen. Strom Thurmond and Rep. Gerald Ford.

This info started to come out after Wm. Buckley's death/CIA -- and prime host on PBS for years!

CIA money has also gone to Pat Buchanan and Jesse Helms. Presumably others, but these are the

names I'm aware of right now.

And there is so much more -- and probably so much more we don't know yet --

For instance, US/CIA created the Taliban/Al Qaeda via Pakistan and funded them right up to 9/11.

Brzezinski who served under Carter relates this story .... that we used the Taliban to BAIT the

Russians into Afghanistan .... "in hopes of giving them a Vietnam-type experience."

Actually, US went into Afghanistan 6 months before the Russians.

Do you recall Carter's remorse at the Russian "invasion" of Afghanistan?

We also seem to have had a lot to do with creating and printing those violent Islamic textbooks

we heard so much about on TV --

Here's the info on that ....

Right wing using religion as a tool of conquest is nothing new --

The US spent $100's of millions shooting down Soviet helicopters yet didn't spend a penny helping Afghanis rebuild their infrastructure and institutions.

They also spent millions producing jihad preaching, fundamentalist textbooks and shipping them off to Afghanistan. These were the same text books the Western media discussed in shocked tones and told their audiences were used by fundamentalist teachers to brainwash their charges and to inculcate in young Afghanis a jihad mindset, hatred of foreigners and non-Muslims etc.

Have you heard about the Afghan Jihad schoolbook scandal?

Or perhaps I should say, "Have you heard about the Afghan Jihad schoolbook scandal that's waiting to happen?"

Because it has been almost unreported in the Western media that the US government shipped, and continues to ship, millions of Islamist textbooks into Afghanistan.

Only one English-speaking newspaper we could find has investigated this issue: the Washington Post. The story appeared March 23rd.

Washington Post investigators report that during the past twenty years the US has spent millions of dollars producing fanatical schoolbooks, which were then distributed in Afghanistan.

"The primers, which were filled with talk of jihad and featured drawings of guns, bullets, soldiers and mines, have served since then as the Afghan school system's core curriculum. Even the Taliban used the American-produced books..." -- Washington Post, 23 March 2002 (1)

According to the Post the U.S. is now "...wrestling with the unintended consequences of its successful strategy of stirring Islamic fervor to fight communism."

So the books made up the core curriculum in Afghan schools. And what were the unintended consequences? The Post reports that according to unnamed officials the schoolbooks "steeped a generation in violence."

How could this result have been unintended? Did they expect that giving fundamentalist schoolbooks to schoolchildren would make them moderate Muslims?

Nobody with normal intelligence could expect to distribute millions of violent Islamist schoolbooks without influencing school children towards violent Islamism. Therefore one would assume that the unnamed US officials who, we are told, are distressed at these "unintended consequences" must previously have been unaware of the Islamist content of the schoolbooks.

But surely someone was aware. The US government can't write, edit, print and ship millions of violent, Muslim fundamentalist primers into Afghanistan without high officials in the US government approving those primers.

109. If things go badly we can simply blame the media, or voter fraud, or both.
I would love to celebrate a Democratic victory, any kind of Democratic victory, but I can accept that sometimes the electorate will reject us even if it is not our fault or in their best interests to do so. That's life.

147. That reflects the opinions of many I've read here who cannot bring themselves to believe
a Democrat can legitimately lose an election. It's like the wide receiver who always cries for a flag whenever he misses a pass because there is no way that he could ever legitimately not catch a pass.

Sometimes most of the voters who cast their ballots just prefer the Republican to the Democrat. It's as simple as that.

We also need a third forum for "This election was stolen and here are the polls we called unreliable to prove it because now they are the absolute truth" threads. There will be a ton of those.

And someone should point out that the early exit polls ALWAYS show us winning, and the later exit polls are when the Republicans start gaining ground or overtaking us. Don't get excited by early returns. It's just heartbreaking later. :(

138. I voted last Tuesday
Sadly, I had to vote for two Republicans.

The first one was Howard Griffiths. Mr. Griffiths is running a write-in campaign against the crooked Phil Hart, the tax protestor who represents my district in the state House of Representatives. (Better: This fucking guy is on the state Tax Commission!)

The second was for Rick Currie for the county commission, and on this one I've got to explain: In the spring primaries there were three Republicans running for this one seat: Rick Currie (the incumbent), Jai Nelson (who Phil Hart is backing with a LOT of the money he has from selling his tax-protestor book) and Chris Fillios. The vote split fairly evenly--Nelson got about 35 percent, and Fillios and Currie split the difference fairly evenly. Because there was no clear majority, Currie launched a write-in campaign. Now, Jai Nelson is running around claiming the voters spoke and "two thirds" of the population (well, two-thirds of the population who gave enough of a shit to go to the primaries--I didn't because I hadn't lived in the state long enough to vote when the primaries were held) voted against Currie. Well...according to the numbers, two-thirds of the population ALSO voted against Jai Nelson.

The anti-Hart campaign is getting really fun. Mr. Griffiths' supporters bought half a page of my newspaper yesterday (I think it's going to be in there again today) to say "vote for Howard Griffiths or don't vote" with a list of Hart's atrocities. On the other side, we ran a letter from a Hart fan that said it was okay for him to take enough logs out of the school board conservancy forest to build a huge log cabin because paying for them would have just been another tax. (A couple months ago we ran an op-ed from his lawyer that compared him to Mandela and Rosa Parks, not mentioning that neither Nelson Mandela nor Rosa Parks were tax protestors.)

140. Many times I have spoken about what I like to see on a team.
I don't care if it was sports when I was younger or crews I have worked on as an adult, the same things apply.
If there is a problem, I want to be working with people that get after the solution. When people want to point fingers and figure out who to blame, it's usually not productive. You get a couple guys like that on a football team and you can forget about coming from behind. If things start to go bad you can count on really getting your ass kicked.
We call the kind of people I hate to see on a team, "locker room poison". I hope we haven't already had them screw us over. Setbacks or dissapointments the first two years of the administration didn't have to cost us this election. I sure hope it goes well tommorrow.
I've worked on crews where we had a screwup and were so smooth fixing it and getting up and running, that no one even noticed. Another outfit I was with in the same situation, the boss would be throwing a tantrum and make us all look like a bunch of clowns.
With the teabaggers help I think that even if we look like a bunch of clowns, they will end up looking worse.

150. Post-election Plan: OUR RIGHT to Revolt Against Results Based on Citizens United
Edited on Mon Nov-01-10 04:37 PM by OlympicBrian
A Constitutional amendment turning back the recent Citizens United Supreme Court decision has been proposed. The Citizens United decision allows unlimited, anonymous, and potentially foreign money in to political organization--to influence both political ads, and lawmaking, via lobbyists. However, such an amendment obviously will not come fast enough to ensure fairness for this election (nor could the Congress act in time). So it is up to us, the people.

Unfortunately, we are left completely open and unprotected--this danger creeps into the heart of our nation at this very moment. In fact, the US Chamber of Commerce, in lockstep with the Republicans, is hard at work funneling secret money to political ads, and is making great plans to vastly expand the influence of Republican and corporate control after the election. Since the Chamber is the world's largest lobbying organization, they will immediately be on the attack--to force their radical agenda and spoon-feed laws into being. The Chamber recently kicked off a campaign to change a law which prevents foreign corrupt practices. And that's just the start. Look at this money, which will only skyrocket due to CU:

http://www.opensecrets.org/lobby/top.php?indexType=s

What's remarkable is 80 percent of the public is against the CU decision! How many issues do the American people agree on to such a large degree? The answer is few--Americans stand firmly against this atrocity.

"Americans of both parties overwhelmingly oppose a Supreme Court ruling that allows corporations and unions to spend as much as they want on political campaigns, and most favor new limits on such spending, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/17/AR2010021701151.html

So, our upcoming election is based on a premise that 80 percent of Americans disagree with. That's shocking! But there is something we can do about it, now.

First and foremost, go out and vote. But then, once the votes are counted, we have it WITHIN OUR RIGHTS to reject the outcomes of elections tainted by money 80 percent of us reject. That includes, the potential Republican landslide.

So what we need is a big protest. A progressive Secretary of State could REFUSE TO CERTIFY the results of an elections for any state. Sure, they might be fired, but it would make the CU issue even more visible. At the same time, Americans could hold massive revolts against the election results, since so many of them agree that they are based on the flawed premise of tainted money in elections.

Will we, as the governed, come forward, along with a brave patriot Secretary of State?

"It is the duty of the governed, to endeavour to rectify the mistake, and appease the passion. They have not at first any other right, than to represent their grievances, and to pray for redress, unless an emergence is so pressing, as not to allow time for receiving an answer to their applications which rarely happens. If their applications are disregarded, then that kind of position becomes justifiable, which can be made without breaking the laws, or disturbing the public peace. This consists in the prevention of the oppressors reaping advantage from their oppressions, and not in their punishment. For experience may teach them what reason did not; and harsh methods, cannot be proper, till milder ones have failed.

If at length it become undoubted, that an inveterate resolution is formed to annihilate the liberties of the governed, the English history affords frequent examples of resistance by force. What particular circumstances will in any future case justify such resistance, can never be ascertained till they happen. Perhaps it may be allowable to say, generally, that it never can be justifiable, until the people are FULLY CONVINCED, that any further sub-mission will be destructive to their happiness."

- John Dickinson, The Pennsylvania Farmer's Remedy, 1768.

At the parties (one of which will probably be the county Democratic election day party), I anticipate either drinking in celebration, or drinking in commiseration.

I've been mentioning Diebold recently with little impact. If Diebold plays a part in election fraud this time around, as they have for every election since 2000, should that go under the reasonable discussion or bloodsport? And either way, what the hell are we going to do about black box voting?

It's become a secondary problem to Citizen's United, but the two are both abominations and need to be talked about and we need to figure out a way to destroy both before they destroy us.

191. Well, we have a KOCH T-bag party being run out of a PR firm ......
My guess is if anything goes wrong, it will simply be more of 2000 and 2004 --

stolen elections.

Granted, the base is distressed with Obama and trampled opportunities for MEDICARE FOR ALL

and with the GOP-like attacks on public education being led by Obama and Arne Duncan -- and

DLC Rahm, etal -- HOWEVER, the public has been punching out TO THE LEFT VOTES at least since

2000, 2004, 2006 and 2008. Evidently 2008 was such a LEFTWARD LANDSLIDE that we may have

elected 24 or more Democrats to the House than we actually got credit for -- some say that!

BUT, I certainly don't see a base that wants to go anywhere but TO THE LEFT!!

And, my fingers are crossed that Democrats will continue to MOVE TO THE LEFT AND BLOCK THE

RIGHT tomorrow -- and that we will have thwarthed another GOP steal!!

We didn't get all the real Dem winners sworn in that we'd elected. And, I've often wondered what the current crop of thugs have in store this time. There's got to be some new dirty tricks they've devised to stall/thwart/derail the elections of 2010. :grr:

Tried and true and then something new? It's always a surprise!!

Can't think of the name of the journalist who was trying to tell America about

the voting scam going on pre the 2000 election -- dropping Democrats from poles, etal.

He's with the Guardian I think -- cause he couldn't work in America and tell the truth.

American networks/newspapers wouldn't report the story and GOP did great deamage with

that ruse!

How important is it that each one of us gets out there and VOTES! No one knows ahead of time how any election is going to go. The results are in the pudding. Let's prove the polls and the pundits wrong.

I mean, to use an analogy, people were expecting it to be the Phillies vs. the Yankees. But that's why they play the games on the field! Who was expecting San Francisco to beat Texas (Team Bush)? But they did!

We may be pleasantly surprised tomorrow night.

211. Everyone of us should be on the phone or walking door to door -- we have more
registered voters and we need to get them to the polls instead of wringing our hands at the latest polls!

I've been on the phones a lot -- and it cheers me up. I've only had one -- yes ONE - person I called tell me he was voting for the repukes.( I'm calling both democrats and decline to state party people.) I've had a very few who didn't want to reveal --- very few! The VAST MAJORITY here in California that I've talked to are voting democratic -- in fact, the last guy I talked told me of course he's supporting the democrats and hurried me off the phone so I could make phone calls to others! He didn't want me to waste my time on him.

Go to BarackObama.com and make phone calls.

Phone for MOVEON

Check in with Organizing for America, find the closest office and show up tomorrow to DO WHATEVER NEEDS DOING.

Tomorrow is unknown. We hope for the best but we are realists. We know the possibility, perhaps the likelihood, is there that we may not win. But the winner is not the one that necessarily ends up with the most votes in this election. The winner will be determined by the next election and the election after that. We are in a long-term struggle against the forces of darkness...

221. I find this to be lame advice and am very disappointed
1. Everyone needs to get out and vote.

WRONG.

Everyone should have already voted

2. After you are done voting, come here and hang out with your DU friends (and DU frenemies)

WRONG.

Here's what I have been doing on election days.

2004 - got up at 6:30 and was a poll-watcher until about 3 p.m. Then went to the office and did some phone banking.

2006 - got up at 6:30 and was a poll-watcher until about 3 p.m. Then went to the office and did some phone banking.

2008 - got up very early and went door-to-door (from a canvassing list) putting on door hangers that said "today is election day. Go vote. Here is where you can vote." Then rode in a van to another precinct where I went door to door and tried to talk to people and get them to the polls. Then, since Jeff said GOTV was working so good here, got in a van and rode 18 miles to a nearby town where I went door to door trying to get people to the polls.

Election day has been a work day for me, and should be a work day for activist types who really care about the results. Find a local candidate or a local party headquarters and sign up to help on election day. Chances are they can use help somewhere.

Often I burn a vacation day just so I can work for free almost all day. Sometimes I doubt if it is doing much good, but it was sure nice in 2000 when Gore won both Cerro Gordo and Floyd counties and also Iowa by about 2,000 votes and I felt like I helped to make that happen. It was also nice to watch 5 term congressman Jim Ryun's concession speech in 2006.

256. Congrats on DU staying up so well; message to DUers: Is Your Thread Necessary?
Edited on Wed Nov-03-10 03:38 PM by muriel_volestrangler
I'm very impressed that DU stayed running at full speed, as far as I can tell, the whole night, with no apparent 'defcon' levels necessary.

DU thus managed to generate 20 pages of GD threads in perhaps 15 hours. And this throws up a problem: when so many threads are started in one night, existing threads can end up getting archived if no-one posts to them in those 15 hours. That's not a long time for a thread to be quiet. In at least one case, someone was unable to reply to a thread because it was archived 'underneath them', although it had been active within 24 hours.

So DUers, the next time there's a huge event, can help with this. This is how:

Don't start a new thread if your comment could easily be added onto an existing one.

Every time you start a thread, you increase the chances a good GD discussion from earlier in the day will get archived. It's not a problem normally - it takes a couple of days of inactivity for a thread to be archived. But on a popular night, it hurts the 'other stuff' that GD also has.

Perhaps a message like this could be added to the next Admin thread like this that's put up before a busy night?
