He said that talking directly to us is really valuable in that he gets some of his best ideas here (I'm paraphrasing). Sheepishly, he said that he prolly spends "too much" time on the boards...something we can all relate to I'm sure.

and, b/c i'm a giant fan-girl, i got him to sign my t-shirt.

19. living in Orlando helps!
i gotta tell you tho -- we have to win this one.

Daniel Webster is the devil, despite what Jon Stewart says...there's no sanity when it comes to theocrats like him. Here's what our local alt-weekly had to say about Taliban Dan:

Dan Webster
The spectre of extremism cast its pall over Webster’s campaign, and it chills us to the very core to imagine that our state could send him to Congress. Webster, a former State House Republican leader, has hordes of tea-party zombies to support him despite the fact that he’s downright terrifying when it comes to social issues – women’s issues in particular. He’s a proponent of “covenant marriage” – that is, marriage in which couples can never divorce and are trapped together in horrifying eternity – which has been likened by his opponent Alan Grayson (who held the dubious honor of being featured in our Halloween masks issue last year), to being the matrimonial version of a roach motel: You can check in, but you can’t check out. Webster opposes abortion unequivocally: Even if a woman conceives a child via rape or incest, Webster thinks a woman should bear her attacker’s baby. As if that’s not scary enough, for the past 30 years he’s been involved with a radical Christian group called Institute in Basic Life Principles that believes rock music is unhealthy and addictive and that women ought to defer to their husbands with “reverent submission and assistance.” Clip out this mask, wear it on Halloween and watch as progressive women recoil in horror!

40. politically, Central Florida is split down the middle -- literally, by I-4...and much of the 8th
District (the fighting eighth!) is on the red side. But, the quality of red here isn't quite like the quality of red I'm familiar with from living in East and Middle Tennessee. There's a Chamber of Commerce variety of red that's particularly ugly...in addition to retired military and rural folks. I think Grayson's done a decent job of speaking for some of the issues that the rural redsters identify with (auditing the Fed, for instance). And, he's been one of the few pols who's seriously addressed mortgage issues...and to great effect here. He pushed thru reforms that have cut foreclosures in HALF! that's a big deal.

The other thing he has going for him is that the quality of red here isn't monolithically Christian, the way it is in Tennessee. So -- he's got a fighting chance, and his GOTV campaign is pumped.

43. Thanks so much, nashville_brook. Very enlightening info.
I have a life-long friend living in Franklin, near Nashville. A lot of Nashville singers live on her street.

We've always jokingly debated about politics since the 70's, but it's been a touchy subject since the day Bush invaded Iraq. We had an ugly difference of opinion about Christian beliefs a few years ago. She broke the ice with an e-mail, but I'll always feel a sadness that someone I knew so well could approve of that p.o.s. so blindly.

i was terrible at star-spotting! mostly b/c i know nothing about country music a la Nashville. I'd have been much more at home in Austin.

Tennessee generally gets bluer the farther west you go. I lived for many years in the Upper East section (Kingsport/Johnson City/Bristol). But, if you go east from Johnson City you hit Asheville NC which is very blue (surrounded by lots of red hollers). Nashville is generally purple. There's a solid progressive community -- lots of really committed folks doing great work. And then there's Franklin! Ack.

66. I grew up hating the Grand Ol' Opry for the (now) silliest reason.
When I was very young we had just a few tv stations to watch. My dad, who worked most of the time & didn't watch much tv, had the unspoken honor to watch what he wanted to watch on Saturdays, which was the Grand Ol' Opry, followed by Porter Waggoner with Dolly ("Duz towels are so soft!") Parton.

To this day, I just don't care for country music. That's not reflective of my love for my now-deceased father; the seed for my distaste for that genre of music was planted at an impressionable age & I've never been able to acquire a taste for it since.

:hi:
