AZ Rep. Grijalva will be on Countdown tonight (NPR's private prison investigation)
Grijalva, Co-chair of the Progressive Caucus in the House, sent out this message today:

I'm going to be on Countdown with Keith Olbermann tonight at 5:30 Arizona time on MSNBC to discuss new revelations about the private prison industry's role in writing and passing SB 1070, the unfair and draconian Arizona measure that's made national headlines since it became law. According to a months-long investigation by National Public Radio, the law was pushed from behind the scenes for many months by the Corrections Corporation of America -- which now views women and children as "the next big market" for its for-profit prison business model.

I'll be on the show to put this news in context and talk about where we go from here in rolling back this and other unjust laws around the country. Please join me if you can.

Peace,
Raúl

Here is the DU thread on NPR's new investigative report on the subject:

Why did RJ Reynolds, ExxonMobil & the NRA help write Arizona's illegal "papers please" law?

2. Thanks for alerting me to the NPR investigation
This needs to get a lot more attention.

Perhaps AZ ought to just give these corporations seats in the Legislature. They already seem to be writing all the state's laws... :(

4. it is a bad situation and
honestly we need Federal Investigations into much of the Govt. here. We have one by the Justice Dept. that has been going on about Arpaio but it is still unknown as how that will result. Jan Brewer has several questions that should be looked into but won't on the state level. The problem is that states have certain powers that the federal govt. can't mess with and these slimeballs know how to hide stuff. I really don't know where Arizona is going and fear it might soon be as hopeless as Mississippi where I moved to Arizona from.

5. Keep the faith, Sarge
The good news is that more and more, this stuff is being exposed. There's to much crap going on for them to succeed at hiding it all. Letting the sunshine in is the first step.

And those investigations of Arpaio should be coming to a head soon.

:hi:

8. A study in how to buy a law
Grijalva: It (SB 1070) had nothing to do with border security. It had nothing to do with the security of the state. It had to do wilth the profit line.

10. Jan Brewer even slipped once and said
1070 did nothing to address immigration. I wondered at the time what she meant, now we have no doubt do we.

12. It's about time this subject got more coverage
A local Arizona station did some work on it and ThinkProgress did a piece on it in July:

Prison Lobbyists Working For AZ Gov. Brewer Are Set To Profit From Immigration Law She Signed

Rachel Maddow covered it in August. Terry Goddard included mention of it in one of his ads.

This should be a BIG story. I hope it picks up steam.

15. Investigative reporter Morgan Loew did that first KPHO-TV story
He deserves major credit for his original investigative work, which led others to begin looking into the AZ private prison industry's tentacles in state government in Arizona.

Loew appeared with Rachel Maddow when she covered it on her show. (It figures it would be Rachel who would spotlight a local investigative reporter and his outstanding work.)
