The midterm elections are at a fever pitch, and the loud rhetoric – especially from Tea Party candidates — is reaching across the globe.
In an interesting review of foreign news sources, Foreign Policy Magazine documents some of the conclusions that are being drawn about America from an arms-length view of the clash of political campaigns.
The French view the Tea Party as “conspiracy theorists, reactionaries, and anti-elitists.” The Spanish express wonderment, saying in one article that “We don’t know if we feel more profound horror or more profound pity.” The Germans characterize the rise of the Tea Party as a “fear of American decline.”
And in China, the conclusion drawn from the contentious U.S. election is that “US policymakers face economic and national security crises they cannot solve.”
