Miller and active duty troops as part of his security detail
Well, this is something that a lot of civies do not know.

The problem is not that he has a security detail... (Yes there are some issues but they are for another post)

The problem is that he hired a company that used active duty troops.

Look many troops, hell here in San Diego they do it. moonlight off base. Why? Pay sucks, especially at lower ranks.

But, unlike you and me, troops cannot get involved in any political event in this way. Yes, you can go to a rally in civies and not make noise about being a service member. But WORKING in a political campaign is against the UCMJ. That is the issue.

Now troopers should have known better, and simply refused that job.

Working comic-con here in San Diego for oh Elite security service... it is ok. Working security for a paranoid Senatorial candidate is not.

Carrying handcuffs at Comic-Con, yes, as long as they're trained.

Detaining a reporter for asking a few pesky questions about using guv'ment equipment for campaigns, is not.

At the very least the troops involved should face an Art. 15 hearing, that is administrative, if not an Art. 32, aka a general court martial.

Of course, given that General Boykin got away with giving highly political-religious speeches in uniform, if I were the JAG officer, guess what would be the defense?

1. Troops also are barred from taking jobs in which they might be injured
I don't know what DoD thinks of event security in this regard, but but being injured seems to me a distinct possibility in that type of work.

2. Absolutely, why they will not be permitted to work a concert
for Elite.

But Comic-Con or any other convention event is considered safe.

3. Are they in Army uniform?
I don't think they are allowed to do that.

4. They are not allowed it participate in a political campaign
in an active way. Uniform or no uniform.

That means you cannot volunteer to fill envelopes, or phone bank, or work security for a political campaign

The most you are allowed to is to attend a rally, off time, in civilian clothes and not make any noise about your association with the military.

When Boykin did what he did, we raised that issue with Congressman Kucinich and how that was going to come back to hunt the army. He happened to be doing a national presidential campaign. We also raised that issue with the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee, US Senate. There are reasons for that. As I said, if I were JAG, that would be the defense. It is a gimme.

6. The positive side of this is that it could lead to DoD clarifing its policy...
...and its guidance to service members.
