3. Yes. I think Ms. Thomas needs to be sent to a sensitivity training class.
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 08:19 AM by JanMichael
and no, I am not kidding.

I think she's a misguided idiot whose phone call showed absolute lack of taste, judgment, or just plain common sense. Since she was either born or raised to have a complete lack of empathy, then she needs what amounts to a social manners training class.

29. I say "aye" to the judgement thing
I mean, if Prof. Hill hasn't apologized after all this time (rightly so), what makes Mrs. T think she'd do it now? Especially upon Her Majesty's command? :eyes:

31. And I love how she called it "extending an olive branch" to call Anita Hill and
demand she offer an apology. What is this woman smoking? Well, obviously she must be pretty fucked in the head to stay with a guy like Clarence Thomas.

4. Didn't Anita Hill Offer To Take A Polygraph At The Time?
And weren't there records of Uncle Thomas making numerous visits and rentals from a D.C. adult video store. I don't have a problem with that but it contradicts the Republican portrayal of him.

the Herald is a pussy version of the New York Post.

She was supposed to be on NPR's "On Point" program this morning to discuss her teabagger group, but she canceled.

15. comments at your link
are unbelievable. The majority are blaming Hill for reopening this years-old scandal -- because (paraphrasing) Hill is a dirty liberal attention whore and Justice Thomas and his wife are such good conservatives. So typical -- rethug does something totally wrong and outrageous, and they somehow, weirdly, make it the victim's fault.

16. I don't think there can be any consequences beyond those currently happening
By that, I mean that I doubt SC Justice Thomas wants the name Anita Hill mentioned - and it is being mentioned, dredging up up the allegations.

My first thought was why did Hill hand over the phone call - but then realized that it could be that she found it offensive (as she said) as it carries an embedded (not subtle) accusation that she lied and was worried that it might be the first of many efforts by Mrs Thomas. The fact that Thomas called this an "olive branch" is stunning. It is not in any way an olive branch.

21. According to what I read it was a school official who turned it over to the FBI -
presumably because of the implied coercion and threat coming from one of the most powerful people in the country.

What I find interesting is the message says she's offering an olive branch for what Hill did "with" her husband, not did "to" her husband. Makes me wonder if this was prompted by Thomas dropping something in conversation that made it sound like he had had an affair with Hill, which makes Hill a transgressor, and so she needs to 'confess her sins' and get forgiveness, and Ms Thomas was giving her the opportunity to do so - thus, the 'olive branch'.

Purely speculative, of course, but it would answer just why Ms Thomas would call after all these years, and it only presupposes that Thomas lied to his wife - which is hardly a stretch.

28. Interesting - I missed the "with" altogether
There still is a question of why Hill sent the note to her school. Your explanation would explain the timing. (Me - I naively thought the wife, believing 100% in her husband, simply wanted this blemish removed from her husband's record. )

33. i have had the same sort of thing happen to me.
something rips the scab off an old wound. seems like it comes out of nowhere, unless you were privy to the conversation that made it spin up.

but then again, too much gin could be it as well. a little substance abuse treatment would be a good thing.

17. Trivia for the Day
Before the Thomas hearings, Anita Hill was one of Michelle Bachmann's law professors - at a law school that was first funded by Tom Coburn's father. The founding Dean at that school was a Reagan administration labor advisor. One of Anita Hill's colleagues was an adviser to Judge Roy Moore.

Anita Hill was/is a class act. Thomas and his wife and a number of Senators and former Senators (including - as previously mentioned - Joe Biden) owe her an apology.

18. FWIW, I don't think Ms Thomas expected Ms Hill to go public with it.
At least when she did it. She may have spent the time between Saturday and Tuesday cringing in the closet.

22. Consequently, Liz Cheney should demand that the gunshot victim apologize to Dick
Democratic officials should apologize to Nixon's family for Watergate.

The Iraqi people should apologize to Bush's family for not having weapons of mass destruction.

Al Gore should apologize to Catherine Harris for winning the election in Florida.

The Tower Commission should apologize to Reagan and Ollie North for investigating Iran Contra. (Those missing/shredded documents were such a shame.)

The Vitter, Foley, Larry Craig wing of the Republican party is still waiting on apologies.

The consequences run on exponientially. Republican Right wing criminals and wrongdoer's deserve so many apologies from nasty disgusting truth-tellers--there is barely enough Corporate Network Media time to cover it all.

<2> If they're both not on some serious psychotropic meds, then get to a psychiatrist - STAT!

32. Since three other women and two were republican
accused him of the same thing, how come some of the posters say Anita Hill was the liar. Those other three women had nothing to gain. I suppose if you dare say something about a republican you are a liar when they had the photocopies of his penis he passed around to prove what he did.

38. Common technique to belittle african americans
Dismiss them by calling them the name of an entertainer or sports figure. In this case it refers to the late comedian Slappy White.

This technique is a little bit too racist for my tastes. I also refuse to call him an "Uncle Tom." That is not a judgement for me to make.

Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 02:12 PM by Stinky The Clown
. . . . in this case, it dates back to the time of his elevation to the national stage and has stuck - to him and him alone. I know of no one called Slappy apart from him.

On edit: if you use the DU search feature and do a search confined just to DU, you will find 255 hits on the word "slappy". All are in reference to Justice Thomas and are by a myriad of posters. The term, in this specific context, has a long history of being tolerated on DU. I am breaking neither wind nor new ground.
