4. If he would quit allowing it to stay out all night, smoking cigarettes,,
...drinking like a drunken sailor and dating those filthy "Mac" computers the damn thing might work more often.

10. The way you ask questions, I can see how you'd think that was a smart-aleck answer...
... Nevertheless, it wasn't.

12. I don't pretend to know what the problem is
when I went to log on I was told, by the error message that the profile is corrupt and it won't let me on as my main profile. It made me to a temp one. I have no clue, I honestly admit it. But I have to say instead of rubbing salt in my wounds I would prefer you just leave this thread.

6. Are you on windows? Which version?
you can try getting into 'safe mode' by hitting the F8 key while the computer is booting up. From there you can troubleshoot.

9. Can you explain your problem better?
Edited on Mon May-21-07 08:06 PM by kineta
Are you on the computer now, or a different one? If you're on the computer are you using a different profile or something? Do you have admin access? Have you rebooted? Do you have virus protection software? When did the error occur?

etc.

This might help:

13. thank you for being actually helpful
unlike another person in this thread. It appears I will have to create a new profile and have likely lost all my bookmarks. I was afraid of that but at least I can get most of what I had back.

Type sfc /scannow

Note the space between sfc and the slash

Sfc stands for System File Check

18. I wish I could help you. I've suffered the same problem in the past
I lost my old profile for some still inexplicable reason.

I created a new one and laboriously got back all my critical bookmarks.

I promptly had *that* profile corrupt.

This happened twice more.

I took my computer to Sam, my local computer guy (and the bulder of all my computers for the last 7 or 8 years). He was unable to say why it happened (and nothing computerese seems ever to get by him).

We rebuilt the profile again.

It never corrupted after that.

I know this isn't specifically helpful for you, but here's the other thing. I downloaded some shareware that allowed me to create backups of my profiles and of my e-mail. I recall the download was like twenty bux or so. I religiously did a daily backup. Since it never crashed again, I have no idea if the shareware actually worked since I never needed it.

That machine is now retired and I've not had the problem again.

and if that works I will see if logging on and logging off will allow me access to one of the two profiles I just created but now can't seem to find to copy folders to.

20. Log in as the "administrator" account
Then in the Control panel make a new user.
Gve the new user Administrative rights as well.
Then log off, and log back on again as the new user.
Run Windows Explorer.
In View Options make sure that hidden and system files are viewable.
Then go to C:\documents and settings\(your old username)\favorites and copy the favorites to your new user's folder - c:\documents and settings\(your new username)\favorites.
Repeat above for the "desktop" folder if needed.
