Whitman just blew the election: Debate on Hispanic TV
Tonight's debate was broadcast on Univision. One in five California voters is Hispanic.

Apart from revelations that Whitman fired her Hispanic maid after learning she was undocumented (and may have known so for nine years), her answers to issues of importance at tonight's debate in my view hammered the nails into her political coffin. For instance:

Brown accused Whitman of saying "one thing in Spanish, one thing in English" regarding government benefits for illegal immigrants. He noted that she has said she would have opposed Proposition 187, a 1994 ballot measure that would have denied taxpayer benefits for illegal immigrants, but ran radio ads during the primary that said those in the country illegally should not receive such benefits.
"This is a question about talking out of both sides of her mouth," he said.
<snip>

Whitman was repeatedly pressed on whether, once the border is secured, she would allow a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants here; she refused to answer and instead repeated her campaign platform of securing the border and creating a temporary guest worker program.

Her stance led to an awkward encounter when a Cal State Fresno student in the audience told the candidates that she is about to graduate with honors but won't be able to find work because she is undocumented. She asked both candidates their positions on the DREAM Act, which would provide an opportunity for citizenship for some illegal immigrants who arrived in the United States as children, complete some college or military service and meet other requirements.

Brown said he would support the measure, and then added that his opponent does not think undocumented students should be allowed to enroll in state colleges. "She wants to kick you out of this school because you are not documented and that is wrong, morally and humanly," Brown said.

(Can you imagine any Latino parent voting for this woman after her answers to these questions?)

21. I hate that this sounds like a slam on the country, but the answer unfortunately is...
...far too many Americans. Because for so long the American meme has been: "Screw the other guy when you have the chance, before he has a chance to screw you." Whether or not that might have been his intention being utterly irrelevant.

It is in fact a very sad commentary on the United States that you really do begin by assuming the worst of the other guy and behaving accordingly. You do it as individuals, you do it as communities you do it as businesses and you do it as a nation.

28. Unfortunately, many people will vote for Queen Megalithic.
Some people here in Calif hate anything Democrat, they usually live in non-urban areas of California.
She will get votes, however, if all democrats vote Brown, we should be in good shape.

4. Not only was Meg an even bigger mess in this debate than the last one,
but Jerry was in even better form than he was last time.

Put a fork in Meg - she's done. She'll spend the rest of the campaign being confronted with the illegal immigrant story, even after the debates end and even if she refuses to talk to the press. On the other hand, Brown has already won both debates, has had a chance to remind CAians what he accomplished as governor, has proved he can think on his feet and has done so with humor while exhibiting a genuine human touch.

Meg looks like yesterday's news, ie: something one might auction off on e-bay.

I'd guess that as embarrassing as Maidgate is to Meg, the bigger embarrassment will be the fact that she wasted $120MM+ in a losing effort. I doubt she'll pull 40% come election day.

14. Go to Univision online.
There was a link to the debate in an earlier thread on DU. That's how I found it. I guess it wasn't televised live. It was taped so Uni could dub Spanish in for the debaters post-production.

...I literally cringed at her comments to the Latina student. Meg told her it was unfair to California residents that she ~~ an undocumented person ~~ took one of the places of a Calif resident in a State University.

Get a fork...she's done. (Thank gawd!) Whitman cannot win without the Hispanic vote and her attitude last evening mega sucked towards them. She was the blonde WASP looking down her nose at those little brown people ~~ man, did that come across like she had it tatooed on her forehead.

27. I wish more Dems would say what they think is right and wrong.
It might not resonate so much with the base, but it sure reaches independents. Let your outrage show, and most people will see that and side with you. You appear like a strong moral leader with convictions, which is what a lot of them are looking for. But if you duck the issue out of fear of offending someone, just the opposite happens.

She and her corporate buddies like the fact that undocumented workers provide cheap labor for them. Someone should have asked her if that is why she prefers not to offer the opportunity of citizenship to them.

35. I hope everyone now understands exactly what this Meg-alomaniac stands for.
Just the first few sentences of the most recent Time articles spells it out:

Meg Whitman says she's running for governor of California to bring a sense of fiscal responsibility to Sacramento. But Whitman's own campaign isn't exactly what you'd call frugal. The former eBay CEO turned Republican politico has already pumped about $120 million of her estimated $1.3 billion personal fortune into the race.

But one of the variables working strongly in Brown's favor is his intellience, which is considerable and extensive.
