I liked Rick Sanchez
Edited on Fri Oct-01-10 09:14 PM by TonyMontana
I thought he tried to be an honest journalist who strove to expose the truth. Sure, he was a little unconventional, and the whole Twitter thing was kind of silly, but ultimately he was not biased. He exposed Fox News for what they are on more than one occasion.

I think it's obvious that Jon Stewart got to him and he took it very personally. Stewart was just trying to be funny, but Sanchez wasn't getting the joke. I don't think Sanchez is an anti semite.

All around I'm sad to see him off of CNN. I bet Jon Stewart is mortified as well.

3. Norman Goldman was saying the same thing - he was pretty right down the middle
and tried to be objective, and wondered if this was all pent up anger he'd been feeling for awhile. I don't know where the anti-semite stuff came from, though.

I ran hot and cold on Sanchez, so I'm not brokenhearted he's gone, but it's always sad to lose an objective voice.

4. I enjoyed listening to him far more than Wolf Blitzer...
His show always seemed to me to be a little upbeat with a sense of humor.

I didn't happen to be listening when he said anything antisemitic. That would have changed my opinion in a heartbeat.

7. I'm sorry, but you have missed the point
This had nothing to do with Stewart. Sanchez's sensitivity at being lampooned occasionally by a comedian was only the premise. He talked about "people like him (Stewart)," and there was no question that from the context he meant by that "Jews." He suggested that people like Stewart (Jews) ran CNN, ran the whole media. Imagine if he said "people like him" meaning African Americans, or gays, or Asians. But it's even worse in a way. Because the accusation that Jews secretly run everything, from the banks to the media, and are the cause of one's own oppression, is an old blood libel with a very nasty history. You remember how that ended. It's archetypal scapegoating. It's unforgiveable for a news anchor on a supposedly dignified (I won't go into that here) network to start railing about his own bosses as "Jews" who grew up 'privileged' and are bigoted against anyone who is not like them.

He was asking to be fired. It's not even debatable.

It was a Mel Gibson moment, in which his real underlying views came out.

Haven't sat down and watched CNN in years, but I don't know why I turned to it the day he was fired. I think it was his Tony Orlando interview that stopped me from switching.

But soon after that he started comparing MSNBC to Fox News as one and the same - basically MSNBC was ALL KO and Maddow. I thought Sanchez went a little too far there. By the end of the day Sanchez was gone.

He's always struck me as being kind of a weasel and self-promoter (especially after the car-accident in '91).

Hoestly, this smacks of publicity stunt. He'll take some time off and end up at FAUX Noise or back as a big market local anchor.

Sanchez isn't a journalist. He had a news opinion show and he was pretty much an idiot.

But that doesn't mean we have to kick him to the curb because he said something boneheaded, and frankly this has nothing to do with my standards.

Think about your complete lack of tolerance and forgiveness the next time you fuck up.

Unless you're perfect, that is. I mean, I guess you must be, right?

I guess I'd better find a copy, because, my God, what if all these years of trying to be open-minded and forgiving of those who make mistakes I've been dead wrong? I mean, if the handbook says a bigot can't be cured and should be condemned to a life of eternal scorn, then I definitely need to correct my thinking! Thank you, thank you, thank you for telling me about this. I'm going to Amazon right now and see if I can get the Kindle version.

74. What on earth would lead you to believe that a bigot like
Sanchez can be "cured", and what evidence do you have that it would be successful in his case? The point is that he opened his mouth and out poured a very hateful historical libel against Jews (Jews run all the businesses, that's the problem). He had a Mel Gibson moment, except he wasn't drunk.

Edited on Mon Oct-04-10 12:15 AM by WeekendWarrior
Read the transcript of the interview, don't merely rely on the paraphrasing of others. That's a republican vice.

And I think bigots can definitely learn not to be bigoted. Part of that process is putting yourself in the shoes of the people your bigotry is targeted at and relating to them on a human level.

Just as I'm trying to with Sanchez -- relating to him as a human being with weaknesses and faults.

And because we don't have evidence that it would work in his case, we shouldn't even bother to try? That seems like a very narrow, uncompromising view of the world to me.

56. He wasn't the most repugnant person on CNN...
There are at least half a dozen worse than he, all still gainfully in CNN's employ.

59. I kind of liked him as well (although I don't watch tv often) -
but that just goes to show people can seem friendly on the outside and carry some really scary thoughts inside their heads. It's too bad it came to termination, but I can see why that had to happen after the final rant. It will be interesting to see whether Stewart addresses it. As a proponent of free speech it may well mortify him that Sanchez was fired.

64. I remember he asked "9 meters in English is what?" when a guy was
explaining an earthquake or tsunami. Brilliant.

68. He had some really good journalistic moments, but he obviously has a racial chip on his shoulder.
He brought this on himself.

72. No, I can certainly see why you would think he's not an anti-
semite. Most people I know go around shooting their mouths off on satellite radio about how the Jews run NBC.:sarcasm:

76. I kinda liked him as well
I was truly scandalized to see him say the things he said on TV.

It was totally out of character.Maybe as you said he did not get that Stewart was only trying to be funny.
however, Sanchez should not have made the comments he made.
All in all the only people who would be happy about the way this turned out would be the FOX folks.
