Bank/Credit card fraud....
Do yourself a favor and pay close attention to your bank/credit card statements this and every month. Look for any small charges (less than $10) that you dont remember making. If you find any (we found 2), be sure to call your bank/card provider immediately to stop the charge. Then contact one of the credit reporting agencies (equifax, trans union, or experian) and put a fraud alert on your credit report.
...traced the IP address back to freakin Russian scammers... It looks like dozens of people got hit with the same thing this month

It's just a friendly reminder from your friendly neighborhood Nightwatcher.

2. I got hit 2 days ago
Person from VISA fraud unit called Sunday evening regarding charges on my debit card. They spotted suspicious charges a few hours earlier and asked me to verify them (about 10). They came to a total of over $600.

I pay for some kind of insurance on the card, purchased by wife, which took care of everything: immediately closed card account and issued a new card with different number. They also restored the money to my account. I thought wife was just being paranoid when she bought the insurance but it turns out to have been a wise move. There was over $4000 in the account and I normally wouldn't have checked it for several days.

The charges came from different places. They said that one of them was from China.

3. liability for fraudulent transactions

You are not liable for fraudulent transactions made using your credit or debit card. Your card issuer is required to give you your money back (chargeback) and close your account, and issue a new card.

You do not have to pay for insurance for this, nor can they charge you a fee for these services (chargebacks & closing account/issuing new card).

So you may want to look into the specifics of exactly what this "insurance" pays for.

4. This has actually happened a couple of times
to both myself and Mr Pip on our separate cards.

Luckily, our cc companies caught them right away, before the charges even showed up on our statements.

And just recently Mr P had to get a new debit card because someone tried to buy something online with his number.

Gotta watch those bastards!!!!
