Poll question: Are Democrats too timid?
Why can't the Democratic party force votes on tax cuts for the middle class? Why does it seem that Democrats are always playing defense?

Otherwise, none of it makes sense as desperate as things are.

I wish many of the leaders in our party would stand proud and fight hard for liberal values. It seems, instead, that so many are always trying to hide liberal values like a dirty secret in a back room somewhere. What's worse, is the few who do admit being liberal, seem to apologize profusely for it, instead of selling the idea to the average person.

It shouldn't be that way. They should be firm, unapologetic, and sell people on just how good our values as a party really are.

It's a shame to see such timidity, really.

5. Yes. But the question is, why?
I think it is proof that most of them are just doing what their wealthy campaign contributors want them to do, not what they promised their constituents.

It's a game of good cop / bad cop.

10. As one often accused of being a "cheerleader", I have to say yes
I'm a realist, which is why I approve of Obama and recognize his great accomplishments. That being said, the Democratic party needs to light a fire under their own asses and start sticking it to the Republicans. They need to say fuck it, whatever happens in November happens.

Go on a 'Truth' campaign and start touting the Health Care Reform bill. Over a third of the public still believes in "death panels." 65% wrongly believe it increases the deficit. They also need to push the middle-class tax cuts through Congress and rub it in the Republican's faces. Let the American people know the Republicans want to block their tax cuts because they want to add 700 billion to the deficit by giving tax cuts for every dollar earned over $250,000.

It's not often I get to share real and grounded criticisms of the Party, I'm usually too busy trying to refute rhetoric from those who want to crash Obama and the Democratic party. But in this case I'm going to have to hold my nose and agree with the OP. It would be a literal tragedy if the Democrats' timidity hands Congress over to the Repukes.

11. No, it takes guts to push corporate legislation when your party claims
to be populist. Guys like Harry Reid, who have the biggest "wimp" reputations, regularly stand up and give the finger to the other side-- you.

16. Harry Reid either needs to grow a pair of hairy balls or let Dick Durbin be the top man.
I didn't intend for that to sound too dirty but I can't help that Senate Democrats are lead by the team of Harry and Dick.

but then again, given their apparent inclinations, I'm afraid to see what they'd do if they actually grew a pair of balls.

Maybe we should be thankful they aren't more active and aggressive?

23. Democrats are too corrupted. They don't really want the tax cuts on the wealthy to expire.
They have to pretend they do. If it weren't for those rascally Republicans!! Sorry, ain't buying it. There is an extremely simple way to get this done. Bush tax cuts expire, reconciliation to pass tax cuts for bottom 98% (like the Bushies did). Done. Elected Dems have to be much better actors than elected Repubs.

There are a FEW Democrats who I have faith and trust in these days, but they are very few.
There are ZERO Republicans who I have faith and trust in these days.

Don't elected Democrats always seem to have the BEST intentions (excepting Blue Dogs) though!! They just never seem to be able to mount an effective strategy or plan to implement what they claim to stand for, and there is just simply NO believing them on most of the issues anymore. If legislation will hurt corporate profits or Wall Street then the Democrats will not pass it. We are at a time in history that if Wall Street and the multinationals win with legislation that is passed then Main Street loses. We can't afford to be losing ground with the Democrats in control (with admittedly a tiny percentage of citizens thankfully as rare exceptions). If the Dems pass legislation that seems to benefit us, then the corporations ALREADY have a plan to compensate for the implementation of that law that will screw us over from another direction. Their profits will be safe. It wouldn't pass otherwise. Alternatively, they have ensured there are large enough loop holes for them to continue or improve on the status quo.

I'm looking to support movements that aspire to change the system, and Yes, I do believe that is possible. Right wingers even want the system changed, and I will happily work with Right wingers to change the way our system works (including getting rid of legalized bribery). They are so deluded they think they will still win if a lot of the changes we want imposed are actually implemented. I'll always vote Democratic, but I can now no longer advocate EFFECTIVELY on their behalf because I would be straight up lying, and that is extremely sad for me. I'm quite adept at changing people's opinions, and I was able to persuade more than a few people to vote for Obama that had never previously voted for a Democrat in their life. Very sad fact: the Dems are almost as corporate bought as the Repubs. Not sure if I'll start playing the lesser of two evils card or not. I don't think I could do that very well. We'll see. It would probably come across as lame to most others as it does to me.

Good luck to each and every one of us.

26. They are pussies. They couldn't push a progressive agenda if they had a 90-10 majority.
They would still cower to the 10 republifux and want bipartisanship. I don't want republicans back in charge of anything, and if the dems had shown some spine from the start the repugs would be nearly non existent by now, but unfortunately they are going to discover in november (yet again) that when you pander to the other side instead of the people who got there you usually go home next election. I'm not sure if they are gutless, or stupid, or both. Some day they may figure out that if they want to stay in power that they should represent those that voted FOR them instead of those who didn't. But I'm not holding my breath.
