More on why Bishop Eddie Long deserves scrutiny

It isn't just the cozy relationship Bishop Long had with President Bush that makes this news and worth another post. The photo accompanying this article of two ultra-conservatives, President Bush and Bishop Long, and protector's of "traditional marriage" in a loving embrace is too cute for words in this current context.

Long is an outspoken and high-profile opponent of homosexuality, once described by the Southern Poverty Law Centre as "one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement."

Long led a campaign for a national ban on same-sex marriage and his church counsels gay members in an attempt to "turn" them straight. In 2004, he led a march to Martin Luther King's grave in Atlanta in support of amending the US constitution to define marriage as "between one man and one woman" – and so permanently barring gay marriage under US law.

The lawyer for two of the men, BJ Bernstein, told the Associated Press: "We are taking calls and we do believe, based on what the boys' statements are, that there are other victims."

This is beyond schadenfreude. Of course, a gay preacher scandal wouldn't be complete without our favorite "Jesus can cure 'the gays'" fallen Talibangelical, Ted Haggard, coming to his defense. Because, instead of more reporting on the potential for massive hypocrisy and suspect motivations behind closeted gay pastors to be homophobic, we all need a lecture from a proven hypocrite, and fallen pastor, how unsavory, unfounded allegations of being secretly gay might unfairly hurt one's reputation?

YES, I am glad this is just becoming a circus. He deserves the attention.

His claim that he can "cure the gay" is repulsive, has no basis in reality and results in harm to people who just so happen to have been born with one sexual orientation vs. another.

If he's this stupid about human sexuality, no doubt he's equally idiotic about issues of science, such as evolution since the two dumb and dumber positions seem to walk hand in hand through life in American society.

He is a danger to children - not because of his sexual orientation but because of the lies he tells and the parents he encourages to tell these lies to their children.

I am saying that, whether the allegations are true or not, the truth is that he makes money by lying to others, harms others' lives by those lies and increases the general stupidity of the American population through indoctrination.

11. I totally agree - if the allegations are correct

he simply joins a long line of religious liars such as Ted Haggard.

It's shameful that they have made so much money by causing harm to others in the name of religion. They are the worst kinds of charlatans because they pervert the message of compassion that is the basis for every decent religious teaching.

12. He is a liar, a con man and a bearer of false witness against

his neighbors, false witness made in order to gain more money and power for Eddie. He is scum, and his congregants are accoplices to his abuses, and to his slanderous attacks on a minority group for the benefit of their own purses. These people, all of them, have descerated many holy things, including Dr King's grave, with their money lust and hate for others.
To me, they are the definition of the 'faith community'. I note that yet again, the bulk of that community is silent and holding coats for Eddie, as are all of his church people.

13. At some point ol' Eddie --

will cry, confess his sins, say that he has been saved from his evil homosexuality, and then ask for forgivness. There is nothing these types of "christians" like more than a delivery/redemption story. All wil be forgven and ol' Eddie will continue raking in the $$$.

A story as old as religion itself.
