Clinton to California to campaign with Jerry Brown
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/california-politics/2010/09/bill-clinton-coming-to-california-to-campaign-with-jerry-brown.html

The Big Dog is coming to California.

Former President Bill Clinton is to campaign with Democratic gubernatorial nominee and former presidential rival Jerry Brown in a series of events up and down the state next month. Lt. Gov. candidate Gavin Newsom fills out the Democratic bill. Both candidates' campaigns announced the news Friday, saying that events are planned for Oct. 15 and 17 with more details to come.

The announcement settles some speculation about how much bad blood remains between Clinton and Brown from the acrimonious 1992 presidential primary. Clinton endorsed Newsom in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. He also made an unlikely appearance in the race in a Meg Whitman attack ad. The Republican used footage from an old debate showing Clinton attacking Brown on his tax record. As the Times has reported, the information that Clinton used has proven to be inaccurate.

(snip)
“I am very pleased to have the endorsement of President Clinton, and I look forward to campaigning with him and with Gavin Newsom,” Brown said in a statement. “President Clinton accomplished a lot for California, and we have a ticket that will accomplish a lot for California's future.”

1. So, Bill Clinton is taking his protoge on a tour for Brown.
I'm not clear how this helps Jerry Brown. Newsom is not popular on the left or on the right.

10. Sure, but its not a high profile race.
I actually forgot he was running for anything. He will win. I guess that's a good enough reason for Clinton to take him along but he won't help Brown.

9. Newsom barely won his first race in San Francisco
-- he had to have a lot of help from Willie Brown mustering city workers on election night and then there were a bunch of ballots found floating in the bay. I wouldn't go so far as to say that he lost that race but he may have.

And apart from his marrying gay couples, he has been a pretty conservative mayor in the city. So no, Democrats are split here about Gavin Newsom. And that's in liberal areas.

I've met him. He seems like a nice guy. His policies in our county have favored big businesses and corporations over working people as far as I can tell.

3. Sic 'em Big Dawg!
I think President Clinton was more than just a little pissed that Meg Whitman used him in her campaign commercial...

5. It is a damned shame that she did not use that $119 million
to actually do GOOD in California.

6. Bah, only a socialist would do that.
Don't you know altruism runs against the Gospel according to Ayn Rand?

8. Thanks, cal04, for this report. It is helpful news. Clinton is very popular here.
This is a very big deal and big news and it will help but Jerry and Gavin.

The Clintons are loved in California. Even my candidate, Barack Obama, with the annointing of Teddy and Caroline Kennedy and Marie Shriver couldn't pry away enough Californians to vote against Hillary. I will always remember the rally with Michelle here in Los Angeles and how great it was, but in the end the Hillary (with Bill) won the primary.

So, there's no underestimating how big this will be if they do travel to both Northern and Southern California together.

K&E :)
