Genetically modified salmon? I'll pass

Beginning on Monday, the Food and Drug Administration will hold two days of meetings regarding federal approval of a genetically altered salmon nicknamed by some "Frankenfish."

"We don't want Frankenfish or the bride of Frankenfish," said U.S. Sen. Mark Begich. "The FDA is on the path to approve this and I am outraged."

The AquaBounty application is considered a threshold case with implications far beyond the one product. If approved, this fish would be the nation's first genetically modified animal produced commercially for food.

"Alaskans outlawed farmed finfish. I am suggesting to people that we ban the sale of genetically altered salmon in Alaska," said Begich.

AquaBounty Technologies Inc. of Waltham, Mass., and traded on the London Exchange, has invested more than 14 years and nearly $60 million developing and seeking approval of its AquAdvantage salmon.

1. I'm fine with it
Put them under a microscope, and the flesh of GM fish is indistinguishable from that of wild fish.

4. The danger is not in their food value ...
... but in the ecological impact when some of these fish inevitably get out in the wild.

3. If they can modify it to kill off all the asian carp, in the Mississippi, that would be cool.
