Good news is bad for Brewer, McCain

<snip>
Beheadings are way down in Arizona.

(In fact, they never rose above zero.)

Even worse for Arizona's two most prominent elected officials <Gov. Jan Brewer and Sen. John McCain> , the FBI just released statistics showing that violent crime in Arizona fell nearly 14 percent in 2009, the largest drop of any state except South Dakota.
<snip>

According to the Arizona Tourism Alliance, the controversy over SB 1070 cost the state a couple of billion dollars and caused roughly 30,000 folks to lose their jobs. Roughly $15 million in convention business was canceled. And that's not the end of it.
<snip>

Given that, Arizona's most high-profile politicians might spend a little time trumpeting our significant drop in crime. But don't count on it. To them, good news is bad. They're more interested in winning the November election than in rebuilding our danged reputation.

Remember, too, that Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu (a conservative sheriff of a NON-border county and ally of Maricopa County's Sheriff Joe Arpaio) recently appealed for public donations to buy weapons for his officers, claiming they're outgunned by the cartels:

It's good to know, as Montini points out, that beheadings are WAAAAAY down in Arizona. I'm so happy that some of our friends there, like blondeatlast, SargeUNN and ProudDad won't have to worry so much about tripping over all those decapitated heads any more! :)

1. More on FBI stats on violent crime drop in AZ:

Violent crime down nearly 14% in Arizona
Sept. 13, 2010 01:13 PM
Associated Press

Crime in Arizona dropped sharply in 2009, with overall violent crime down by 13.9 percent.

FBI statistics released on Monday show murder and non-negligent manslaughter dropped by 22 percent in 2009. Last year, 354 people were victims of murder or manslaughter, compared to 454 people the year earlier.

Forcible rape was down by 3.8 percent, and both robbery and aggravated assault dropped by double digits.

Property crimes dropped by nearly 12 percent, lead by a 32 percent decline in motor vehicle theft.

Only South Dakota saw a larger drop in violent crime than Arizona.

2. Yeah, the acid from the bodily fluids was totally ruining my fake JChoo's.
Montini's the best--he should be (as he once was) on the front page of the local section but his use of facts pisses the wrong people off.

4. Yeah, Montini's great
Especially compared to some of the more-conservative columnists they have.

It's especially good to have Montini there as a voice of reason on immigration issues!

:hi:

3. Thank you Arpaio and Baboon for reversing this trend that
never existed in the first place. Sorta like the boy who takes credit for us not getting invaded and murdered by some force that doesn't exist, then says, "look how good a job I am doing."

5. These guys are good at manufacturing threats
Fear is their stock in trade.

Some may not recognize your 'baboon' reference, but Sheriff Babeu has been doing all he can to spin the myth of violence on the border. An ally of Arpaio, I think of him as 'Little Joe.'

I haven't ever tripped over any heads or "illegals" here 60 miles from the border.

And now, since SB1070 was signed into "law", I haven't even tripped over the shoppers from Sonora, Mexico who used to fill the malls!

Jan brewer though; she's bat-crap crazy but she's relatively sane compared to the crowd that runs the Legislature so you can imagine what we're probably in for now...

We got SB1070, concealed weapons in every bar, attempts to stifle free speech and education (the Tom Horne anti-ethnic studies law), Constitutional protection for hunters but NONE for the water supply (no riparian rights), decimating education funding (We're NUMBER FIFTY!) while cutting taxes on corporations and the rich, etc. etc. etc. The republican/libertarian lab experiment or as Jon Stewart called Arizona, the "Meth Lab of 'democracy'"...

And that's when brewer and the termed out "moderate" republican Senate Leader were blocking a lot of crazier stuff! (Until brewer's poll numbers went into the toilet so she signed the execrable SB1070)

Rumor has it that the next President of the Senate will be Russell Pearce, the neo-nazi who sponsored SB1070 (among his most moderate efforts)...

Damn you, Janet Napolitano!!!

9. LOL! That's true...
Sheriff Babeu's Pinal County is NOT on the border. He got called on it when he appeared, touring the border, in McCain's "Build the danged fence" ad.

Babeu has also done radio interviews with a white supremacist station and with a station hawking conspiracy theories. He's an extreme wingnut who sucks up to white power racists and anyone else who might support him. :puke:

8. It's not bad news for them because it won't hurt them in November
The panic they've caused and the racist button they've pushed will help them. The truth is irrelevant - as it usually is in American politics.
