Skater Saves Q'uran from Burninator Fool

A planned Quran burning Saturday in Amarillo was thwarted by a 23-year-old carrying a skateboard and wearing a T-shirt with "I'm in Repent Amarillo No Joke" scrawled by hand on the back.

Jacob Isom, 23, grabbed David Grisham's Quran when he became distracted while arguing with several residents at Sam Houston Park about the merits of burning the Islamic holy book.

"You're just trying to start Holy Wars," Isom said of Grisham after he gave the book to a religious leader from the Islamic Center of Amarillo.

Grisham, director of Repent Amarillo, which aims to deter promiscuity, homosexuality and non-Christian worship practices through confrontation and prayer, said he was just trying to exercise his right to free speech...

(Repent Amarillo has been brought up a few times on DU. This group runs around and harasses people at gay bars, coffee shops and other places they deem "sinful". They're (now formerly) part of a dominion-type, spiritual mapping organization called http://www.talk2action.org/story/2010/3/6/95620/29842">R.A.V.E.N. - While Repent Amarillo was wholly supported by R.A.V.E.N. when they went around harassing private citizens at legal businesses, apparently the Q'uran burning stunt was too much bad publicity. R.A.V.E.N. has now washed its hands of Repent Amarillo)

4. I love me that skaterboy.
By the way, anyone noticing a pattern here? The right-wingers are pushing the envelope of decency using the First Amendment as their excuse.

I bet Larry Flynt never realized that when he was out there protecting the rights of pornographers, he was also protecting the rights of right-wingers to behave badly and start race wars.

7. I'm all for First Amendment Rights.
I'm sure some day that I will thank Larry Flynt for protecting the outer edge of Free Speech because one day I may have need of it. But, it's hard not to notice that the right-wingers are now pushing the envelope for their causes--and we would be smart to watch them closely.

10. The same free speech right you worry about
...is what enabled the protesters to assemble in that city park against the Q'uran burning fool. Repent Amarillo arrived to a phalanx of signs and people that opposed its actions. The protest was organized online and in a matter of hours. Well over a hundred people showed up compared to Repent Amarillo's two measly representatives.

This very vocal squelching, in the heart of Republican country, warms my heart like you would not believe. True Democracy in action.

Repent Amarillo has been pushing the envelope for far too long. They harass private citizens, peak in cars and photograph license plates. Their leader, David Grisham, is a disturbed individual and his public shaming is way overdue - a public shaming that would not have been possible were it not for every American's right to free speech.

12. Hate crime.
Just as Larry Flynt tested the envelope of what is approved Free Speech, so must we determine as "reasonable people" what constitutes hateful speech or inciteful speech. Keep in mind that the issue was resolved in a manner that the offender could constitute as theft. That's why we need to establish legal parameters to avoid the need for clashes.

...in order to keep the peace.

Seriously, if you want to keep associating Larry Flynt with the right wing, that's your business. Just don't expect me to play along.

EDIT: I spell bad.

15. I'm associating the methods. Both Larry Flynt and the right-wing used
the First Amendment to test the edges of their constitutional rights. If you want to ensure that the right-wing fails, where Larry Flynt succeeded, I suggest you start looking for legal reasons that will pass muster.

that's an amazing badly-written story. Isn't anybody teaching journalists how to contruct clear sentences these days?
