1. I'll Probably Get Flamed For This One But - Election Night 2008 In Grant Park, Chicago.......
when Barack Obama was elected President. Probably a million and a half people in downtown Chicago on a mild November night that was pure joy and elation. I hope someone else that was there that night would back me up on this.

7. The unity didn't last very long. Which might seem to indicate it wasn't that real.

But I could say the same thing about most of the examples.

4. I'll back you up - I think in the long run you're right.
I was there, in the same panel as the stage, and it was a remarkable feeling. It seemed pretty likely he would win before we even arrived there, but there was an incredible joyful surge when he actually went over the top. The world had really changed, changed for the good. Sometimes that happens. :-) The crowd was so peaceful going home, and the transit was so well-planned for getting folks home. I'll always remember it. That night fixed something that had been broken for a long time.

I can confirm it was a really mild night, you must have been there to remember that. I recently saw a column where the writer talked about the "chilly November evening in Chicago" (not an exact quote). Well, he wasn't there, that's for sure.

It's the abnormal and unnatural Republican behavior that is currently muddying up the memory, I think it will become clearer with time that this was an event that brought us all together.

13. Of course, if the writer was from Atlanta or LA, he might see a mild Chicago
November night as a sight chillier than a Chicagoan would - might have been there, but not from there.

Really pretty mild.

8. Good ones!
The whole Prohibition saga is vital to American history.

Sputnik was a tin ball that changed everything.

Army-McCarthy hears, when America sacked-up and told a fascist to go fuck himself.

1968-CDC, another game-changer.

Death of FDR. The world mourned.

Nixon resignation, the world gaped.

12. I think most feel that way.
When you find out after years of rumor and mystery that sex is one of the few things that lives up to the hype.

14. Gulf of Tonkin, 'I Have a Dream,' Cesar Chavez, Berkeley Free Speech Movement...
...Joe McCarthy, People's Park, Roe v. Wade, Fall of Saigon, WATERGATE, Cuban missile crisis, invasions of Panama and Grenada, Contragate (Reagan, Ollie North), U.S. troops enforcing integration and used for riot control, KENT STATE and JACKSON STATE...

The list is endless, even if you try to use a general heading like 'civil rights.' And, going back as far as you do, you're including the entire history of the U.S. It might be more useful to define a recent time frame--but even then, it's a long list!
