CNNMoney - "Taxes: What people forget about Reagan" - Shocking! Admits He Raised Taxes - MUST READ!
Interesting article that contradicts the mythology of Reagan, and notes that the real Ronald Reagan would be portrayed as a RINO and likely face a challenge by a astroturf Tea Party candidate in today's Republican party.

After Reagan's first year in office, the annual deficit was 2.6% of gross domestic product. But it hit a high of 6% in 1983, stayed in the 5% range for the next three years, and fell to 3.1% by 1988. (By comparison, this year it's projected to be 9% but is expected to drop considerably thereafter.)

So, despite his public opposition to higher taxes, Reagan ended up signing off on several measures intended to raise more revenue.

"Reagan was certainly a tax cutter legislatively, emotionally and ideologically. But for a variety of political reasons, it was hard for him to ignore the cost of his tax cuts," said tax historian Joseph Thorndike.

Two bills passed in 1982 and 1984 together "constituted the biggest tax increase ever enacted during peacetime," Thorndike said.

3. You want to see a blank look on a winger's face?
When they start up with the St. Reagen crape, they expect the evil liberal to bash Reagen from a liberal viewpoint ...

Ask them what the top three or four points of conservatism are, get THEM to lay the terms ...

It will most likely be cutting taxes, smaller government and strong on national security ...

Then hit them with the REALITY that Reagen raised taxes a dozen times, he grew the size of government greater than any president until Jr and that he cut and run after the Beruit troops barracks bombing ...

The look they get is pretty much what your computer looks like when it locks up ...

Just blank ...
