So now we are scared that Beck had a rally?
Edited on Sat Aug-28-10 07:42 PM by thewiseguy
I am perfectly OK with living in a society where people have a difference of opinion and are allowed to express it by rallying. Do I agree with those who rallied today? No

But I also would not spend so much time trying to minimize the event or compare it to lets say Obama's inauguration. I really do not see why some people even compare the two?

This is how I look at it. Those went and rallied today, did it for a reason. They had their demands, now I am not sure if they will be met or addressed. However, I can talk about myself. I also rallied and went out in support of Obama two years ago. I do not regret the fact that I voted for him and not McCain but I am not as optimistic as I was then. I am coming around the fact that it is better to rally for a cause than a politician. As my mom says, they are all the same.

So for those who went out and participated in Beck's rally today, I hope they did it for a cause and not to appease Beck's narcissism.

2. Respectfully disagree.
I've found DU:GD to be outstanding today. This is the type of day that makes me value this place so highly.

16. I'll be glad when this day is over!
So many Beck threads, with my cable TV spewing him in the background!

Some of the threads were fun, but it was stressful trying to keep up with them--and impossible to even sample all of them.

Today did bring out our common sentiments about civil rights, which I suspect is why you thought it so outstanding--and very few here would disagree with you (funny that the 'usual suspects' were absent from the discussions today, lol).

But it was a crazy, maddening day, and I can't wait to return to normal.

3. I'd say it's the right wing that's scared.
That's why they held Whitestock.

As for me, I'm just up to my usual ridicule.

5. I guess Alan Colmes attended,
but he only went so he could write a fairly humorous review. :D

The people who attended because they somehow appreciate Glenn Beck's message? They are seriously misguided.

13. I just made an OP about it before I saw your excellent OP.
I'm worried. The Tea Party movement has grown incredibly swiftly with Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck as frontmen, Fox News as amplifier, and a virtually unlimited amount of money.

It's unprecedented to see this kind of political movement evolve this rapidly as far as I can tell.

I posted Gandhi's quote, "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win." in my OP. Are we at the stage of verbal "fighting" yet or physical fighting? We've tried to "ignore" them (how many exhortations have you seen pleading to ignore Sarah Palin for example?), we've tried to ridicule all of them. And then they show up for a rally of this size?

They aren't going away. They are growing. This is real and it's the first real steps towards fascism at the grass roots that I've seen. The corporate influence peddling has always been so cleverly disguised (MIC, Wall St, etc.) but this is the first time I've seen average Americans really taking up the banner in these numbers, so fervently.

18. "So this is how liberty dies, to the sound of thunderous applause . . ."
I never thought a Star Wars move would be so relevant. They had lot of people there, but much less than The Right wing media will tell you.

21. Also, Sinclair Lewis: "When Fascism comes to America...."
"...it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

I weep. This Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin-palooza is like some kind of Sinclair Lewis quote come to life....

It's a Nazi Nuremberg rally! Beck is seizing power!

Some DUers tend to freak out too easily.

20. I believe he is getting a less positive reaction than he wanted - I see
people on the right were not favorably impressed with the "miracles" that happened there today, and are feeling "used"...better late than never.

There are lots of problems hosting an event like that when you have nothing to offer anyone but thin bullshit. Beck may have hurt himself today.
