let the "bush tax cuts" expire quietly.

obama is NOT "extending them".
obama is NOT proposing "his version of them".
obama is NOT "keeping them except for the rich".

obama is PROPOSING BRAND NEW TAX CUTS.

this way obama gets his name on (another!) tax cut.
this way we can clearly compare obama's tax cuts proposal to what it would be without any congressional action.
this way they can't (mis)characterize it as a hike on the few people at the top end who have the audacity to complain that bush's plan didn't give them enough.

in fact, there's nothing even sneaky about this. shrub's law called for the rates to revert to 2000 levels in 2011. he was fine with signing that into law. if obama were to do nothing, IT WOULD BE *BUSH* HIKING OUR TAXES, not obama. he's the one who signed it into law.
