Lest we forget - they hate him for being a Christian, too
"Sen. Barack Obama's pastor says blacks should not sing "God Bless America" but "God damn America."

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama's pastor for the last 20 years at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's south side, has a long history of what even Obama's campaign aides concede is "inflammatory rhetoric," including the assertion that the United States brought on the 9/11 attacks with its own "terrorism."......

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright's sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans. "

1. Let's face it, they just plain hate him, no matter what he does...
He could walk on water the full length of the Reflecting Pool in D.C., they would still hate him.

I have never heard or read any of Rev. Wright's sermons, but the South certainly espoused a particular reading of the Bible which they used to support slavery as within God's design; the Northern abolitionists, and Northern churches generally, espoused a reading which condemned slavery.

For what it is worth, there were many in the North during the Civil War who believed the war was God's judgement on the entire nation for allowing slavery to exist as long as it had; even some in the South came to feel this way.

I admit that I don't know what statements Rev. Wright has made about America and African Americans, but even the fight against slavery didn't involve social equality for African Americans, as the overwhelming majority of Northern white Americans at the time, including many abolitionists, were extremely racist: most thought slavery wrong, but they also wanted black people to go away somewhere else. Even Lincoln felt this way.

9. I think you'd be interested in
hearing the whole message that Rev. Wright spoke-
As you suggest, it's quite different than the one the media fabricated.

There is a link to an excellent 'condensed' version of the sermon and the 'history' behind it in my reply below. If you get a chance give it a glance, it's worth the effort.

6. much of what Rev. Wright said in his sermon was actually true
- and was distorted to make it seem as if he was saying something other than what his full message was.
I was really disappointed that Pres. Obama felt he had to distance himself from Rev. Wright as he did. I understand why he did, but it was disappointing and sad all the same.

This is a really good article if you have a chance to read it- it explains the message that was so distorted by the media.
Brian Williams should be ashamed of himself for his lazy 'journalism' imo.

11. thanks for
taking the time to check it out.

It's sad how so many people let the media form opinions for them. I'm wary of anything the media is ranting about without checking it out for myself then forming my own opinion.

20. Reverand Wright has helped out family members
One of my sisters-in-law was buried by his church when the family was broke. Even though I'm not a Christian I have always liked this man.

8. 18% of Americans wish the Confederacy had won
18% of Americans grumble the N word under their breath (or out loud) when they say "Obama."

18% of Americans who think he's Muslim make up 50% of the GOP voters.

THAT is the point the mass media seems to ignore. These people will never believe Obama is a citizen, or that he's not Muslim, or that he's Christian.

10. As a native Chicagoan, I can attest that both Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Fr. Michael Phleger have
accomplished more for this city than every other clergy person combined. They have attracted small businesses back into their under-served communities, while combating liquor and tobacco sales to minors, drug dealers, and others who have destroyed Chicago's neighborhoods. Would that Obama be more like them!

12. Rev. Wright got f-d over
by the slime machine.
Some of his comments as a result of the smear campaign really put Pres. Obama in an awkward position, where he felt he had to distance himself from Rev. Wright. I was disappointed, but I was also disappointed that Hillary let the media play her with the "is Obama a Muslim" meme- The election garbage and the media fanning all kinds of stupid crap for ratings and shock value took it's toll on everyone imo.

I respect Rev. Wright. He is not who he was made out to be by our media.

18. You're damn "wright"! I'm an old white dude who respects what this holy man has done for this
town, so invested with big-money wheeling and dealing and offal that oozes out of City Hall to La Salle Street and the neighborhoods.

14. Kicked&Recommended!!!
The problem is they want to define christianity and how it is preached and taught and they don't like the way Rev.Wright tells the truth.

Maybe they need to visit a lot of black churches and they will see that this is nothing new. The black preachers they need to worry about are the one that were paid off by Bushco..
