Brutality anger hits Aurora
Community leaders will ask Aurora PD to turn over an alleged police brutality investigation to feds

Peter Marcus, DDN Staff Writer
Friday, August 20, 2010

Community activists today will call upon the Aurora Police Department to follow Denver’s lead by turning over to federal investigators a case of alleged police brutality in which a Denver man was beaten and tased by Aurora police after a routine traffic stop.
Irman Jones, 31, was stopped in October 2008 near Mississippi and Sable in Aurora after police said he failed to use his turn signal. He was subsequently beaten with a flashlight and then tased, according to Jones’ account.

Jones was pulled over in October 2008 for failing to use his turn signal. Officer Matthew Milligan asked for Jones’ license and insurance information, but it took Jones some time to find the insurance card because his wallet was packed with business cards, he said.

Milligan asked Jones what was taking him so long to find the card, and suggested that Jones might have been drunk or on drugs, according to Jones’ account. Milligan “snatched” Jones from the car, hitting him at least three times with a flashlight, knocking him unconscious and to his knees, said Jones.
When Jones awoke, he found himself attached to a Taser gun and was tased twice, according to Jones.

Milligan’s backup arrived shortly after and Jones was placed in handcuffs and arrested for failure to use his turn signal and disobeying an official police order. His car was impounded and searched, though police found nothing illegal inside the vehicle. Jones was not wanted on any warrants and had no major run-ins with the police prior to the incident, he said.
