Dodd Reverses Position, Suggests Warren May Not Be Qualified To Head Consumer Bureau
Source: Talking Points Memo

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd has for weeks called into doubt whether Elizabeth Warren can be confirmed to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. But for the first time this week, Dodd has called into question whether she's qualified for the job, reversing his earlier position.

"It isn't just a question of being a consumer advocate. I want to see that she can manage something, too," Dodd told the Hartford Courant.

That's a far cry from what he told TPM and other reporters just weeks ago, when his only stated concern, based on his conversations with colleagues, was that Democrats may have a hard time rounding up 60 votes to confirm her.

"She's qualified, no question about that," Dodd said. "The question is whether she's confirmable."

11. Absolutely. Main street will be taking in the rear yet again. And without asking for a vote ...
... they'll claim the votes aren't there. Like they do for everything else they don't want.

7. They're squeezing something of his alright, but it's a little lower than the jugular...
...if you catch my drift.

Think south of the border.

What leverage would they have with him?

8. 90% of Bush's appointees would have failed the "management" standard
Edited on Wed Aug-18-10 11:19 AM by zazen
I guess he's going to imply she's a pointy-headed academic from Harvard who can't manage people. I suspect there are many at the Fed and Treasury who didn't have management experience, either, but suddenly, the CFPA will require a Wharton MBA and 20 years' experience as a CEO.

A horse racing manager was put in charge of FEMA and people DIED, but Warren can't run the CFPA. Go figure.

And if management is so damned important, they should consider Brooksley Born or Sheila Bair. I won't hold my breath.

12. Give it up, Dodd. She'll get nominated - probably after Obama gets back from vacation which will
be a good boost to the base heading into the fall campaign season.

18. Start pushing on the Senate and we'll make certain she is confirmed.
Dodd needs to hear from us. I sure hope he's gotten the plum lobbying job he's been auditioning for. I've grown to intensely dislike this man. He should just shut up with any populist rhetoric in the future for it rings hollow.

21. And what's the #1 requirement to be considered a "manager"?
It's whether you embrace the safety/protection/advancement of upper management, in this case wild west capitalism.

Meanwhile, you've done great work in your role as Committee Chairman, Mr. Dodd. Without you, the entire US banking industry might have come to the point of collapse.
