Which critics are they talking about? Which message? I don't understand the president's position on the "professional left".

I'd guess CNN is referring to the Mosque message. In that case the message is as coherent as most politicians' - say something that is "safe" even though it may be interpreted in different ways. Then rephrase it in the direction you want if something goes wrong.

While the messages haven't been incoherent, I do think the administration needs to work on creating messages that make somebody happy. Too many recent messages don't have a lot of force, or direction, or inspiration, or feeling of leadership. Unfortunately that happens during elections when they are afraid to turn anyone off, but I'd rather seem them trying to excite some people even if it turns others off.
