"A Nation That Spends More Money on War Than Life is Approaching Spiritual Death"
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 09:08 AM by kpete
Admittedly, there are other reasons for America's failure to use its substantial wealth to provide adequate care for its own people. Some Americans, driven by mean-spiritedness or greed, resent the very idea of sharing with others. Furthermore, years of tax cuts for the wealthy have diminished public revenues.

Even so, it is hard to deny that there is a heavy price being paid for making military power the nation's top priority. With more than half of U.S. government discretionary spending going to feed the Pentagon, we should not be surprised that—in America, at least—it is no longer considered feasible to use public resources to feed the hungry, heal the sick, or house the homeless.

We would do well to recall an observation by one of the great prophets of our time, Martin Luther King, Jr.:
"A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death."

3. It would be great if next time some goof wants to go to war the people would say wait a minute
But I wouldn't count on it.

Americans love war. They love war more than breathing.

Bad part is the Republicans know this. Just put a little scare into the people and most will fall right in line. Even send their sons and daughters off to kill and be killed in a war that we know was started over lies. They won't blink an eye.

:(

6. A slight correction if you will..
Americans love *winning* wars, losing isn't anywhere near as popular.

You can go one week to the next here in my red state hell and never get the slightest indication that we are at war, seven years ago when it seemed we were winning this place was wall to wall flags and "support the troops" stickers.

4. K & R
All the more outrageous when you realize our government is acting AGAINST the majority's wishes.

Snap out of it, you sold-out Democrats -- and give us an alternative, would you?

8. Oh now, be sensible!
Just because a majority of Americans want something - an end to illegal wars and occupations or single payer health care - do you know how powerful the folks who don't want those things are? Can you even imagine how swell their cocktail parties are? I didn't think so. And if Democrats get all up in that anti-war thing, they might not get to go to those cocktail parties, and then where would they be every evening? Don't you care about the social whirl of Washington DC at all?

9. Dem politicians know that all it would take is one or two suicide bombings here and Americans ...
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 10:25 AM by NNN0LHI
... will be ready to nuke a billion muslims. They won't even think or care about the repercussions. Even a lot of Dem voters will be for it once you put a little fear into them. And they also know that if the republicans ever gain power there is a good chance the next rethug president might be for it too.

The birthers, screamers and other assorted nuts running for office as republican candidates proves this worry has some merit.

The republican party is no longer just the opposition party. They are the enemy. They don't care if they get us all killed. These are the same crazies who have been praying for the rapture and have now taken over the republican party.

16. Eight Day to Strike
Bolton says that Israel has eight days to strike Iran.
When that happens, we will be in it.
What can we do to stop it?

20. Follow the money.
War makes a LOT of money for defense contractors and powerful people.

Health care, housing and social issues are not money makers for the powerful.

As always, follow the money.

21. This sentence:
Some Americans, driven by mean-spiritedness or greed, resent the very idea of sharing with others. is what really shocks me. Trust me, I know it's true - but it shocks me that this so-called "Christian nation" is so resentful of sharing.
