Republican Candidate Paid $ 4K per OSU Lecture while calling for College Cuts
OH the hypocrisy!

OSU paid Kasich $4K per classroom session

Kasich gave lectures as presidential fellow at OSU

By Laura A. Bischoff, Columbus Bureau Updated 9:25 AM Monday, August 16, 2010 COLUMBUS — As a candidate for governor, Republican John Kasich has called on colleges and universities to cut costs and force professors to teach more courses.

Yet for seven years Kasich served as a “presidential fellow” at his alma mater, Ohio State University, in a role that paid him the equivalent of about $4,000 per campus visit.

“It sounds like a perk program for a politician that we can’t afford,” said Matt Mayer of the Buckeye Institute, a conservative-leaning think tank that has posted government salaries in an online database.

In a 2008 report to a securities industry regulatory group, Kasich said he worked at OSU four hours a month. OSU also paid $20,000 a year to his longtime political ally Don Thibaut. Richard Stoddard, special assistant to current OSU President E. Gordon Gee, said the program’s goal was “to have a variety of interaction with students. All we had was positive feedback,” Stoddard said.

2. according to the article he made $50 K for 4 hours /month
Yet he calls for cuts. UFB. If our state educational institutions need to cut costs, maybe dishing out big bucks to their cronies is one way.

4. I doubt it. This just broke in a small town newspaper outside of Columbus
(where OSU is). I googled to see if it made Columbus Dispatch but didn't find reference to it.

I bet not only the students but professors & support people will be (rightfully) pissed.

I passed this story on to a journalist friend but he's not local. I hope it picks up steam.

6. Here is a comment from an OSU professor:
Instructors at OSU who are simply hired to teach a course (i.e., they are not regular faculty, but they often included Emeritus faculty) are paid between $2,500 and $5,000 for an entire 10-week course, including the responsibility of grading and meeting with students. That works out to something ranging from $63 to $125 per lecture. Even a full professor making $100,000 per year would be paid only about $200 for a 2-hour lecture (when research, grading and office hour requirements are factored in). $4,000 is simply obscene.
