Israel has '8 days' to hit Iran nuclear site: Bolton
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 06:34 AM by Scurrilous
<snip>

"Israel has "eight days" to launch a military strike against Iran's Bushehr nuclear facility and stop Tehran from acquiring a functioning atomic plant, a former US envoy to the UN has said.

Iran is to bring online its first nuclear power reactor, built with Russia's help, next week, when a shipment of nuclear fuel will be loaded into the plant's core.

At that point, former John Bolton warned Monday, it will be too late for Israel to launch a military strike against the facility because any attack would spread radiation and affect Iranian civilians.

"Once that uranium, once those fuel rods are very close to the reactor, certainly once they're in the reactor, attacking it means a release of radiation, no question about it," Bolton told Fox Business Network.

"So if Israel is going to do anything against Bushehr it has to move in the next eight days."

Iran's Nuclear Chief: Bushehr Plant Will Go Online by Month's End

<snip>

"The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, indicated Friday that Iran's controversial nuclear power plant at Bushehr will go online seven to eight days after Russia delivers its nuclear fuel supply on August 21. Russia indicated that it would start loading fresh nuclear fuel into the reactor on that date.

Iranian state media on Friday trumpeted the imminent start-up of the Bushehr nuclear power plant in what appears to be a display of national pride. Past announcements that the plant would come online had been met with repeated deceptions.

Atomic Energy Chief Ali Akbar Salehi told journalists that the plant would be launched next week, when nuclear fuel is "transferred inside the Bushehr plant." He added that it would then require "seven or eight days to place inside the reactor."

2. Oh John, you try to be a brinksman but you now lack gravitas
that being a friend of one of the crazies in power gave you.

I know you miss it. Now, swallow the pill and think about what life will be like when you've recovered.

5. Let's Play A Game...A Deadly One...
Let's pretend a nasty, evil foreign power has based troops in Canada and Mexico with politicians who constantly are calling for invasion, now would Mr. Walrus say the US should just roll over and not defend itself? Now look at the map of Iran and see Iraq and US forces to the east and Afghanistan to the West (not to mention US presence in the nearby "Stans" of the former USSR). You'd kinda want to protect yourself.

Next is the stupidity of launching any nuclear strike against Israel. Any detonation would lead to an immediate retaliation as well as the possibility of blowback that would kill far more Iranians and their allies than Israelis.

This ain't no Risk game, John...actions have reactions and the neo-con sabre waving does nothing but inflame the insane.

7. 'Obama won't hit Iranian reactor'
<snip>

"Former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton said he didn't see "any signs whatsoever that President Obama would make the necessary decision" to strike Iran's nuclear reactor, speaking in an interview with Israel Radio Tuesday.

Bolton claimed Israel has only three days to strike before Russia "begins the fueling process for the Bushehr reactor this Friday," after which any attack would cause radioactive fallout that could reach as far as the waters of the Persian Gulf.

In an interview with Fox Business Network earlier Tuesday Bolton had said the deadline was eight days, but he revised it to three in the Israel Radio interview, saying Iran and Russia had announced they would begin fueling on Friday.

"It has always been optimal that military force is used before the fuel rods are inserted," Bolton explained. "That's what Israel did in Osirak in 1991, and when they attacked the North Korean reactor built in Syria." Israel bombed the Osirak nuclear reactor in Iraq in 1981, and a Syrian reactor in 2007.

However Bolton didn't see any indication that an Israeli strike was going to happen. "Obviously if Israel were going to do something it wouldn't exactly be advertising it. But time is short."
