Walmart workers in the new post-bankruptcy GM:
Edited on Tue Aug-17-10 03:14 AM by Hannah Bell
I've worked at the Indy Metal Fab plant since June of 2007, I am still considered a temp, even though they have defined temp three different ways to put me off, and others like me. We do not get health insurance, holiday pay, or vr days. If we miss a day for no matter what reason we are wrote up, put on notice or sent home.

When we where hired they said we were seniority temps, when we had our 90 days in and ask about being hired they put us off as much as they could then said we were flex temps, then put us off till a lay off and when they called us back took our time away and said we were vacation replacements, our seniority dates keeps changing, when Christmas came around they sent out a letter saying we were terminated , so a lot of people didn't receive unemployment, then when they called us back they said we were not terminated but on the same hand we were not laid off either, and never gave us a clear answer on what we were at that time...

At Fairfax many of the people in your position were hired in 2007. Some slipped in to tier 1 traditional employees while others became 2 tier. These 2 tier people actually had to take a pay cut because they had worked so long as temps. they had been making more. It depended on who was laid off at the time the hiring was done.

I just got here last year & the current temps. are in the same boat as you. They work the majority of the year , get laid off in December & then start over again in January. Some temps were brought in in June & have already been laid off. Only to have the company tell us they will be opening up the temp/flex referral program because they are running low on applications. Basically they do what they want.

I feel for this guy, as do a lot of GM workers. Yes, he was brought in as a temp, but last year all the temps went on strike to give the GM worker better benefits, better wages....they were ALL told that in the contract they were going to hire temps that were currently working at plants only to later be told that it didn't apply them because they were in closing plant status. The temps have been lied to, some of them more so than others. The temps at the Pittsburgh plant have been royally screwed over the past 2 years.

I just want to say Didi, before you judge maybe you should find out why he is so upset. I would be upset to have to pay union dues only to be lied to later down the line. UAW used some of the temps to get the votes for the contract and for that it is wrong. Don't make the temps pay dues and don't let them have a say in the contracts...don't use them as pawns, which is what they did with the temps at the Pittsburgh plant!!!
