By MICHAEL NEWSOM - mmnewsom@sunherald.com

Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant and several state lawmakers are hoping to enact Arizona-like immigration measures in 2011 — the same year they’ll be up for re-election or seeking higher posts.

Bryant is a likely gubernatorial candidate in 2011, and if he seeks state government’s top job, he might be stuck in a crowded GOP primary. Illegal immigration is a major campaign issue across the country after a recently passed Arizona law reignited the national debate. That law requires law officers to check the citizenship status of those they come in contact with while enforcing other laws, among other provisions.

2. Sadly we have become the party of promoting illegality to gain votes.
I don't think that is a good thing either.

3. That is only because the Democrats let the repugs define the issues. It is way past
time that the Democrats, who incidently won the election, take the lead

17. I'm not sure what you're talking about.
What posters on DU are running for office and "promoting illegality?"

Your post indicates a lack of intelligence.

4. This is the same asshole that said it was safe to eat the fish and seafood
and swim after the gusher and corexit was dumped in the gulf. They, the politicians, in ms all seem to be on the oil payroll, or at least act like they are.

16. Actually, I was referring to the fish thing.
Fish and a swim, trying to convince us everything's all better, I don't know if you've checked the news but Obama just did exactly that.

19. Yeah, I read that and saw the pics. Well that's just fine and dandy if he wants
to swim in it and eat the fish, but I won't be doing that for years to come.

22. But he's trying to convince you to.
And judging by the reactions here, it's working for a lot of people.

And I doubt it's a coincidence that this pic came out right before they announced they're thinking about ending the drilling ban early.

14. It'll be like Whack-a-Mole
Five years from now, I expect half of the red states to have laws like Arizona, and ten years from now, I expect all of them to have at least some legislation in place to deal with the fact that illegal immigrants are going to move to places that don't do this.
