So what do you think of Virgin Bikini Waxing?
You know, eight-year-olds?

"Virgin" Bikini Waxing Now Popular for Pre-Teen Girls

http://gothamist.com/2008/08/15/virgin_bikini_waxing_now_popular_fo.php

snip

"Virgin-waxing for children 8 years old and up who have never shaved before. Virgin hair can be waxed so successfully that growth can be permanently stopped in just 2 to 6 sessions. Save your child a lifetime of waxing... and put the money in the bank for her college education instead"

snip

Pre-puberty hair, called ‘velus,’ is a fine, light pigmented hair. When a child hits puberty - which these days is happening to kids as young as 9 - the hair coarsens and darkens.” And must be torn out by the roots if you don't want the other girls to laugh at you!

Of course some people, like child psychiatrist Candida Fink, think “this is another example of how younger and younger girls are being sexualized and objectified.” And Dr. Diane Levin, co-author of the book So Sexy So Soon, tells MSNBC that “girls are learning the worst possible lessons about body image and body hair. Keep your bodies like little girls’ because that’s what men like.”

:wow:

nothing like making an 8 yr old self conscious and "worried" about their body:(

8 yr olds should be skateboarding, playing with dolls, riding their bikes & NOT focusing on their "girlie bits"..

I don't think they need to be 18 years old to get ears pierced, but 18 days old is clearly too young to consent.

children may get their ears pierced with parental consent at various ages below 18.

I've seen 16, 15, 12, and 11, depending on the sign in the store.

53. I have no problem with any of that since presumtively the child wants it
One of my daughers wanted her navel done in the worst way at 15. She was declined permission. By 18 the urge had past. At 20 she had to have her ears redone since she had not worn earrings for so long they closed over.

I had both ears pierced at one point...but no longer.

57. I am sure this is spoken by someone who has never
had the hair ripped from their body vs. their ears pierced.

There really is NO comparison regarding pain/discomfort.

With that being said--I wouldn't do either one of them to my child.

60. You missed the point here
..which is my fault for not clarifying better.

The level of pain/discomfort doesn't really matter. If you want other examples of higher levels or duration of pain, I can give you several. My point was that parents have been making these kinds of decisions pretty much forever, and not just in the US, but all over the world in practically every country and culture. So the camels nose was under the tent a long time ago. Perhaps some of these things need to be classified as abuse, but if that is the case where do you start and where do you end and who gets to decide based on what standard?

61. I understand, however
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 10:47 AM by Horse with no Name
if a child grows up and decides she doesn't want her ears pierced, she simply can let them grow closed.
It isn't permanent.
OTOH, hair removal is.
Unlike circumcision, pubic hair removal serves no purpose or intent--not even under the guise of cleanliness or prevention of infection. It is purely a procedure to sexualize and objectify a young woman by making her "desirable" to men without her consent. Something that is medieval and smacks of something done in Afghanistan or other third world countries that have no respect for women.

No comparison.

And life is long. The subconscious does weird things when we get older. I don't think our subconsciousnesses would remember us fondly for doing something so painful to ourselves, though consciously, we may say we don't remember the pain, or "It musn't have been that bad." It would be an interesting study to follow-up with these poor pubeless girls when they are crone.

the entertainers, artist's models and wait staff were all nude-or were wearing nothing more than body paint. I didn't see a single pubic hair the entire evening. It kind of felt like being in a large room with many, many naked prepubescents of both genders-which wasn't very sexy.

Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 09:51 AM by county worker
All ages all sexes showered in one big shower room. Women shaved everything right there with everyone around. It didn't bother anyone. Most women were hairless all the time.

My guess is that what some people can tolerate others can't. There is no "normal" there is only what we feel is right or not.

On edit, a person being nude does not always mean they are nude for sexual reasons or they are nude intending to be a turn on. Most of us are not very sexy looking nude.

True story on waxing. I decided I was going to wax the old bikini area. It turned out very badly, blood, bruising, swelling and burns. It was the most painful week and half, I couldn't wear pants/undies I was wearing this makeshift diaper like thing. Needless to say I've never done it again. My poor husband didn't know what to do, he went between, screaming about going to the ER (how embarrassing)to giving me pounds of ice.

46. Thanks for this thread ...
Mainly because I can't see how anyone on DU can blame Obama for this ... yet.

Beyond that ... on a more serious note, I have 2 daughters, one 11, on about to be 8.

The 11 year old is "developing" rapidly. She likes to shower in "mom's shower", which is attached to our master bedroom. I happened to walk in not knowing she was in there and I learned that my sweet little 11 year old girl had more pubic hair at 11 than I did at 17. Talk about scaring dad. I almost passed out. Later that night I gave my wife grief for not telling me so that I would not be shocked. Turns out, my wife had also developed a bit early, who knew?

Beyond that terrifying moment ... when I hear folks discuss shaving that stuff, or waxing it ... I get even more uncomfortable. I mean, a woman is supposed to have hair there. A little girl does not. A woman does.

Sure trim it, thin it, make a topiary garden, but something should be there. And the girl / woman should decide. But when it comes to my daughters, I'm not sure I want to know.

We are mammals. We are primates. As such, we have hair. Hair is nothing to be ashamed about. In fact, hair can be a sign of good health.

And that includes the hair "down there." What an atrocity that little girls should be pressured to seek this out.
