2. Have you ever read "Hiroshima"?

I'm surprised at how many people have never read it. It was required reading when I was in high school. I think you have to read that book before you really understand what nuclear power is, and to develop a sense of compassion.

3. It was assigned reading in my Sophomore English

class in high school in 1961. It fit in very well with the dive under the seat nuclear attack drills we had a few years earlier in grammar school. In those days, awareness of the nuclear risk was strong in everyone. You couldn't escape it.

4. It still should be assigned reading.

Just to let kids know what utter devastation a nuclear bomb can cause. The part of the book that shook me he most was that one person was so completely annihilated that only his shadow was left on a wall. "And the living envied the dead".
