Church plans Quran-burning event

Source: CNN

(CNN) -- In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Pastor Terry Jones told CNN's Rick Sanchez earlier this week.

This goes interestingly with another story from the Guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2010/jul/30/anne-rice-quits-being-christian">Anne Rice 'quits being a Christian':

"In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen,...

...No wonder people despise us, Christians, and think we are an ignorant and violent lot. I don't blame them. This kind of thing makes me weep. Maybe commitment to Christ means not being a Christian," she said.

36. What do you mean "next"?
Edited on Sat Jul-31-10 09:37 AM by OmahaBlueDog
In the mind of many fundies, 9-11 was the start of a war against Islam and, more importantly, the start of the fulfillment of the prophecy from the book of Revelation. Islam must be defeated so that the mosque on the third temple site can be torn down; so the third temple can be built; so Jesus can return; so the believers leave earth in the Rapture; and the rest of us all get the swim in the lake of fire that we deserve. That's why the fundies love the Middle East wars so much.

I've seen Freepers refer to Bush as a "king" (in the biblical sense). Someone here had a great post a couple of days ago that cited stats the other day showing just under half of self professed Christians believe the earth is < 10,000 years old. I'm surprised they're not also burning "Origin of Species" -- or, for that matter, "Inherit The Wind."

Where I'm currently confused is who is the anti-Christ at this point; for many years, I was told it was Bill Clinton, but now I guess it's Barack Obama. Hillary, maybe? Barney Frank? Nancy Pelosi? Bono? Angie Jolie? Chloe Kardashian? The possibilities are endless....

13. What is the attraction of these 'nondenominational' churches anyway?
Are humans so susceptible to charismatic figures that they willingly check their brains at the church doors and defer to the 'wisdom' of a certifiable nutjob? That's a rhetorical question, BTW; history is rife with examples that prove this statement.

The congregation are in control here. They fill the pews and the collection plates. This "pastor" is just telling them exactly what they already believe. That's his job, to say what they want him to say, to tell them they're right (about God and everything else) and validate and reinforce their idiotic beliefs. If he didn't do that, they'd toss his ass out and hire someone that would.

If this is what religion is to them, then the issue is not "religion of the devil," but "religion IS the devil."

Their religion is the devil, anyway. They'd be burning people at the stake in their god's name if they could.

I'd be more impressed if she rejected religion altogether. I mean, this is standard practice for just about all religions, not just Christianity. Maybe Buddhism or Jainism is different..... but I bet you could find similar instances in their long pasts.

23. I wonder if the pastor of that church has read the Koran.
Might as well pile on the Bibles as kindling to burn all those Korans with... cos there's a fair chunk of Jewish and Christian scripture in the Koran.

A "radical Iman" could equally say the same thing that Pastor is saying about Christianity, or Judaism.

Regrettably these days I am finding myself in the same boat as Anne Rice. The Anglican tradition (esp Church of England) is the best fit but alas the Episcopal Church of the USA doesn't seem to follow in step with the CofE. I can understand where Anne is coming from - in that we certainly believe in Christ, but that His church has gone astray from His message and completely distorting what Christ stands for. Similar thing can be said about Islam: the prophet Muhammed stood for particular things, but his followers have distorted his message too.

51. All the Abrahamic religions are superstitious and violent. Big deal.
The followers of Mohammed have NOT distorted his message. Neither have the followers of Jesus. They both said lots of hateful things like "infidels must be killed" in the case of Mohammed.

In the case of Jesus, "I come not in peace but with a sword..." etc. etc. etc. "Most people will go to hell and be cast into the lake of unquenchable fire" etc. It goes on and on and is totally psychotic, ratifying all the psychotic stuff in the O.T.

We ALL understood JUST how she felt, and don't really blame her. We also happen to be of a liberal bent politically. Some of them have gone so far to not call themselves "christian" anymore, but "christ-follower" or "christ-seeker" so as not to be affiliated with the crazies.

70. Oh, the road they're going down!!!
http://fcit.coedu.usf.edu/holocaust/gallery/01622.htm

Heine predicted it all so many years before, as part of the German national character!! He must have been such a visionary.

"German thunder ...rumbles along ponderously. Yet it will come and when you hear such a crashing as has never before been heard, in the world's history then you will know that the German thunderbolt has fallen at last. At that uproar eagles in the air will drop dead, and the lions in the remotest deserts of African will hide in their royal dens. A play will be performed in Germany which will make the French Revolution look like an innocent idyll."

Written in 1834, NOT 1934!!!
