In west central Ohio, a large inland lake, Grand Lake St Marys is virtually shut down due to an explosion of toxic algae caused by phosphorous accumulating in the lake over the years. Businesses dependent on the lake are suffering from lack of summer recreational activities normally held at the lake.
Friday morning, Governor Ted Strickland (D) held a news conference at the lake to announce plans to treat the lake in an attempt to eliminate the algae and get things back to where they were.
People in the audience were giving Strickland hell for not doing enough and not acting quickly enough. This is a very Republican district (Boehner is their congressman). Any other time, people in this area will tell you to get the stinkin' gubmint out of their lives. This area is also very agricultural with MANY livestock and poultry operations. (The watershed of this lake has the highest concentration of livestock and poultry in the state.) Manure from these operations run off into the streams that feed the lake. And these farmers will fight to the death against regulating farm operations in areas such as manure management. They'll only agree to voluntary programs from their local conservation agencies. And we're all seeing how well that's been working.
Instead of realizing that years of their laissez-faire attitude toward the local agriculture and pollution may have contributed to the problem, business owners are making Strickland their fall guy.
It's not too different from Obama taking the crap from the failed policies of Bush/Cheney.
It's been a proven recipe for Republicans to take control of offices even though their policies cause the problems people are crying about today.
