Great Lakes threatened by Michigan oil spill
http://www.jsonline.com/news/opinion/99583629.html?commentSubmitted=y&refresh=41375#comments

Another irresponsible oil company destroying our planet. Good to see the Milwaukee Journal / Sentinal, winner of two recent Pulitzer Prizes, calling for investigations.

Quotes from the article:

"The investigation into how the leak occurred must surely consider Enbridge's track record. The company paid $1.1 million to settle allegations in Wisconsin that it broke environmental laws during construction of a pipeline during 2007 and 2008. It also was responsible for pipeline spills in Rusk and Clark counties in the winter of 2007. The Detroit Free Press reports that the company has been the target of 31 federal enforcement actions since 2002. That its record was dwarfed by BP's 58 actions during the same period offers small comfort."

"But if we've learned anything from the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, it's that vigilance is virtue. Regulations must be tough and enforced. Companies must understand their responsibility. We urge officials to examine both the company's actions and inspection regimens.

But first, stop the spill and protect the lake."

2. Wearing my conspiracy hat
After the oil/gas corporations destroy our natural clean drinking water resources, they will then build water decontamination factories funded by our tax dollars and then sell the water to us like they do heating oil. Another company will charge delivery charges. This will be commodified like coal and oil are and they will occasionally have contamination issues which will restrict the supply and bring prices up. As the earth heats up, the demand will increase. They will lay claim to the rain and it will be illegal to have your own rain barrels (of course, will all the pollution, people will be advised that the rain is contaminated).

After the oil runs out, instant new industry.

4. Don't forget water-hungry crops like corn...
...corn that feeds cattle, feeds people, and provides raw ingredients for sweeteners and biofuel.

Sounds like one big f'n circle by which corporations to suck Earth dry. Can we have some sustainability, please?
