A few fire pics

We have had almost 200 new fire incidents since the lightning extravaganza Sunday. There is more "abundant" lightning in the forecast for tomorrow. Oh, joy!

We have a crew camping on a fire that they just reached at dark on the SW flank of Paulina Peak. We have smoke jumpers who just hiked out for pickup after several days on four fires in the western district (Cascades).

Just a check-in with pics.

This fire was yesterday (7/28) about 26 miles SW of me. It was running and crowning by the time the Walker Range crews got there.

A small lightning sleeper fire about 4.4 miles to my NE this afternoon. This one got nasty quick.

A little later this little fire started putting up black smoke and flames. The Incident Commander very wisely put two fire engines, a water tanker, and a helicopter water drop on the fire.

1. I should be embarrassed to ask, but are you in any danger of being torched?

Do you have a quick escape route?

3. The danger is from fire on the road off the butte.

If that happens, USFS fire crews would respond quickly to hike me off the non-fire side or a helicopter would pick me up at the modified landing zone near the lookout tower.

Worst case scenario: there are fire shelters (Shake-and-Bakes) in the lookout.

You know, if I didn't know better, I'd say those little smoke plumes look harmless...

So small. Almost minor. But I know better...

Thank you for standing watch day after day, saving our forests with your work.

I'm glad you have Nick too...It would be awfully lonesome without his company.

5. Hi Peg!

My eyes hurt from scanning after so much lightning. My relief lookout, who is at the other lookout now, said today that her eyes and surrounding tissues are sore from so much binocular work this week.

Nick is my anchor in the high desert.
