Fox Ratings 1.85 million viewers
Source: Huffington Post

Fox News continued its domination of cable news ratings in July. The network averaged 1.85 million viewers in primetime for the month--more than CNN, MSNBC and HLN combined. Fox News also drew 461,000 viewers in the coveted A25-54 demo.

While far behind Fox News, MSNBC still beat CNN in primetime for the sixth straight month. MSNBC averaged 679,000 total viewers and 229,000 in the A25-54 demo.

CNN averaged 530,000 total viewers and 146,000 in the A25-54 demo, while sister network HLN 452,000 total viewers and 145,000 in the A25-54 demo.

How did individual programs do? Below see the top 30 programs in cable news for July 2010.

Am I missing something. There are 300 million Americans and Fox has 1.85 of them wrapped. What is wrong with this picture.

1. Well, one thing is that FOX is on most basic cable tier packages.
MSNBC is not - in many markets, MSNBC is considered a 'premium' channel. Considering the cards are stacked against them, I think MSNBC's ratings look pretty decent in comparison.

"well, fox isn't a real news channel. That's why their ratings are so high. They're an entertainment channel."

7. That would mean you're more likely to have Autism than to watch Fox "News."
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 04:49 PM by Ian David
I'm only using that as an example because of the TV commercial that says 1 in 100 people have Autism.

But you're probably more likely to be an Albino than to watch Keith Olbermann?

5. A useful number would be a percentage based on number of cable viewers who have access to it.
Fox "News" is usually in the lowest pricing tier in the cable line-up, while MSNBC usually isn't.

8. Fine, they dominate cable news.
How do they do against the big three (ABC, NBC, CBS)? I seem to remember that they don't do well when compared to 'real' news programs.

13. We need to remember
that Faux is often the 'default' channel in public places ranging from McDonalds to doctors' offices to auto dealerships to nursing homes. When RW hosebags rise to positions of authority that enable them to choose the default channel on TV, they love to inflict their festival du merde upon the rest of us. That's why RWers are so dangerous when they achieve anything resembling *real* power!

25. "Forced viewers" might be another way to express it.
I refuse to fly through the "Bush" airport in Houston, for instance, because they force everyone in the airport to watch this bullshit propaganda channel. You can't sit down without their garbage blaring in your face. Certainly not a 'news' channel; not really an 'entertainment' channel; more of a 'forced psychological rape' channel, if you ask me.

Here is another source: http://tvbythenumbers.com/category/ratings/cable-news

HLN – 278,000 viewers
P2+ Prime Time
FNC – 2,221,000 viewers
CNN – 458,000 viewers
MSNBC –778,000 viewers
CNBC – 299,000 viewers
HLN – 525,000 viewers

Go below and lots more details....

http://tvbythenumbers.com/2010/07/27/cable-news-ratings-for-monday-july-26-2010/58360#more-58360

Here is my point: Right wingers have only one place to go. 1.85 million? Maybe so. But the rest of the viewers go to CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, HLN - all moderate to left leaners. How many? Do the math. Do both Total Day and Prime Time.

If you are really inclined go to the second link and do some averages.

Sorry, but I do not buy into the ratings eminence of Fox cable news. But it does tell us where the mini-minds of America hang out for their uh - news.

15. I don't know if this is counted in the statistics, but:
In Dallas, the Fox viewers I know are usually single, angry, lonely people, and the ones that watch MSNBC are
usually family people with 4 or more people watching when Keith or Rachel come on. At least, in the microcosm
of people I know, that makes for 4 times as many people actually watching a TV with MSNBC as there are watching
a TV with Fox on it.

That's nothing like a reliable statistic you can go to the bank with, I know, but it begs the question of how
meaningful any of the other statistics are?

I am retired military and everytime I go on a military post every TV is tuned to Fox.The military members including family members are pro war and Fox talking heads are warmongers. Most of the military retired are conservative brain washed dittoheads,if they survey the military they always will get high numbers and I am sure Fox is aware of their loyal watchers in dittoland.

21. The idiocracy has arisen.
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 06:55 PM by political_Dem
The problem now is how to conquer the idiocracy enough that we can save our country. The sad thing about FOX is that their racism, politics, and animus toward all types of change has poisoned this country for two generations. And thanks to their style of news every other news channel and department has copied their style and branded it as the new way viewers must absorb the news.

Murdoch has planted an anathema not only in our country, but across the world. He should be so proud. :sarcasm:

22. Average age of FAUX News viewers
is 65. Not much of a future there, I'd say.

On the other hand MSNBC reaches more viewers 25-54 than FAUX.

23. FOX is the "go-to" source for right-wingers. Everybody else gets distributed
around the remaining channels. 1.85M is a pretty small fraction of right-wingers, I'd say.

26. It's Always Been Wrong...
Let's dig into those numbers even further. First of all, 1.85 is almost half of what they had a year ago. As you see, out of a nation of 100 voters, that's still less than 2%...and who says all of those are rushpublicans? That number isn't even 5% of the vote Gramps McCain got in '08.

These numbres have also been conflated as they're only compared to the other "news" networks...there are far more people watching ESPN or Nickelodeon...it's not even as many who watch the 11:00 news in New York or LA on a nightly basis. But its trumpeted, primarily by faux and echoed by the corporate media as being something more than what it is. Problem is when they echo the faux talking points that it reaches far more people. It's time for the other networks to fact check first and propagate last.
