Condoleezza Rice, Aretha Franklin duet for charity
Queen of Soul, former secretary of state join forces for inner-city youth

PHILADELPHIA — Condoleezza Rice is no stranger to the whims of royalty. So when the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin, decided the two should get together to play a song or two for charity, it was decreed.

The former U.S. secretary of state and Franklin took the stage Tuesday evening at Philadelphia's Mann Music Center in a rare duet for Rice, the classically trained pianist, and Franklin, the soulful voice of a generation. Their aim was to raise money for urban children and awareness for music and the arts.

"It is a joint effort for the inner-city youth of Philadelphia and Detroit," Franklin told The Associated Press the night before their concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Their appearance in the three-hour concert before an estimated crowd of 8,000 overflowed with Franklin's catalog of hits and arias from the world of opera and classical music.

"We decided to give it a try," Franklin said. "So here we are, in the city of Brotherly — and Sisterly — Love."

Rice, better known as a diplomat and national security adviser, played piano while Franklin sang her hit "I Say A Little Prayer" as well as "My Country 'Tis of Thee." Earlier in the program, Rice performed a selection from Mozart's "Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor" with the orchestra, a piece she said she practiced furiously.

6. Ackshully, she was an oil tanker, too
until she wasn't. Exxon, maybe. Maybe not.

Name of tanker changed mysteriously shortly before CR became SoS, I bleeve.

7. Piano has always been her strength
but apparently it never paid the bills. I have no problem with her displaying her very real talent, especially for charity.

I want her out of government forever. I want her to face a court over her role in the last administration, especially regarding the illegal war on Iraq and the abrogation of the Geneva Conventions.

However, I do recognize her musical talent and always lamented she was restricted to hymns over the first 8 years of the millennium.

8. Anyone else find it odd that they always show her playing on tv..
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 05:29 PM by tridim
and never include the audio of her playing?

Maybe it's just a coincidence?

On Edit: I take it back, I just watched the video and she admitted that she's not very good.
