What can a Democratic President achieve without a Democratic Congress and conversely what could a Democratic Congress achieve with a Republican President?

Assume that Republicans continue to be as obnoxious and obstructionist as they are now.

of a Democratic Congress and President to get the third.

Bush definitely delivered the Courts to the PUGS .

2. You need both a Democratic Congress and a Democratic Presidency to make progress.
A Republican Congress can block a Democratic President.

A Republican President can veto a Democratic Congress and push a Republican foreign policy including starting a war.

17. The only way a Democratic Congress would work with a Republican POTUS
is for us to have a veto-proof lockstep opposition-crushing Democratic majority in Congress able and willing to face down a Republican POTUS. Of course, things might also work if we have a Republican POTUS who wasn't a total a-hole and genuinely wanted to work with the Democrats in Congress but the odds of that happening are......well..........it ain't happening as long as any viable Republicans remain in thrall to the "teabaggers", "fundie freakazoids," corporate gangsters, and Faux News and its *colorful* personalities. :eyes:

8. Clinton accomplished alot
I didn't like much of what he accomplished, but he was still able to advance much of the DLC agenda. Just kinda depends upon what your goals are. The conservadems probably like a democratic congress and a republican president. Ditto for the blue dogs. The war machine is probably loving the current relationship, because the GOP votes as a block so all they need is a few democratic votes to get what they want. If you want a truly progressive government, your only real hope is a progressive president and a democratic congress (of almost any stripe).

9. The same either way.
People need to learn that politics is 99% for show.

Direct action is the only way to change the world.

14. I agree with Mark Twain.
"History has tried to teach us that we can't have good government under politicians.  Now, to go and stick one at the very head of government couldn’t be wise."

16. The House counts most because it controls government's purse strings.
As it should be in government of the people, by the people, for the people. Out of all of government, the House shows the greatest fidelity to the people's will.

With the presidency they have a lot of power and can stop the other party's nonsense quite a bit, whatever they might do in the congress.
