The New Willis Avenue Bridge
Edited on Mon Jul-26-10 03:14 PM by malaise
Today I saw them moving a large section of the bridge on a barge
This is too freaking cool. I hope they'll have a show from start to finish.

2. Actually, it is the new Willis Avenue Bridge. It is shown near the Brooklyn Bridge, but is not . . .
. . . . there to replace it.

5. You're right
The new bridge connecting Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx will replace a span that opened in 1901 and carries more than 70,000 vehicles a day. The existing Willis Avenue Bridge will remain open to traffic as the new span is floated into place atop foundations and piers.

6. From this view, it looks like they will need to either raise the bridge or lower the river.
Somehow, "shipping" a bridge that will eventually cross water by way of a barge on the water strikes me as strange. Or balanced.

9. Yep - that is good news
but the best news is that New York is repairing her bridges.

10. They Replaced the Third Ave Bridge

several years ago basically the same way. I believe I watched a Discovery show on it, floating the new bridge down, setting the new one on it's mooring, dealing with the rising and lowering tides etc... Pretty cool!!!!!!!!
