Nixon's Enemies List

Nixon’s Enemies List is the informal name of what started as a list of President of the United States Richard Nixon’s major political opponents compiled by Charles Colson, written by George T. Bell<1> (assistant to Colson, special counsel to the White House), and sent in memorandum form to John Dean on September 9, 1971. The list was part of a campaign officially known as “Opponents List” and “Political Enemies Project.” The list became public knowledge when Dean mentioned during hearings with the Senate Watergate Committee that a list existed containing those whom the president did not like. Journalist Daniel Schorr, who happened to be on the list, managed to obtain copies of it later that day. ....

(Cover memo from the List's author Geo T. BELL, at the link.)

Master list of Nixon's political opponents

STREISAND was on it!1 Evan BAYH's daddy (shame on sonny-boy)!1 Shirley CHISHOLM, CONYERS, RANGEL, and *the entire Black Congressional Caucus* and the entire Brookings Institution.

Surprises George WALLACE and (now-Fauxer) Mort KONDRACKE, Steve McQUEEN (I thought he was a wingnut), Joe NAMATH, Tony RANDALL.

Not surprises, Gregory PECK, Carol CHANNING, Jane FONDA, Bill COSBY, Dick GREGORY, Paul NEWMAN.

1. Also, what did he do with that enemies list?
I was a researcher in a bank. I was called into the president's office and I was given a list of names whose accounts to search for large transactions in and out, things that could have been tied to payoffs of some description. It was all very hush-hush and the bank president looked very uncomfortable about it.

I recognized some of those names. I had no idea what it was about at the time, but damned if I failed to find a single thing. That happens when you only pretend to look. I was not pressured to look harder.

Later when those same names turned up on Nixon's list, I realized my instincts had been correct.

That's what the whole thing was about, the abuse of power trying to find dirt on people he was paranoid about, and he was paranoid about a hell of a lot of people. As a president, he was a mixed bag. As a human being, he was one sick ticket.
