Pierce Co. officials spend $30k in golf trips

TACOMA, Wash. —

Pierce County officials and sheriff's deputies have spent at least $30,000 during the last two years to visit golf tournaments, including the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, Calif., to prepare the county to host its own golf events.

The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that another $5,200 were spent by a city official who oversees the Tacoma Dome and other public facilities.

County officials say that the trips are necessary to ensure the county is ready to host the U.S. Amateur Championship at Chambers Bay next month and the U.S. Open in 2015.

The county expenses for the Pebble Beach trip have not been filed yet.
