Daniel Schorr, dead at 93

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=128565997&sc=fb&cc=fp

Daniel Schorr, a longtime senior news analyst for NPR and a veteran Washington journalist who broke major stories at home and abroad during the Cold War and Watergate, has died. He was 93.

Schorr, who once described himself as a "living history book," passed away Friday morning at a Washington hospital. He was able to bring to contemporary news commentary a deep sense of how governmental institutions and players operate, as well as the perspective gained from decades of watching history upfront.

"He could compare presidents from Eisenhower on through, and that gave him historical context for things," said Donald A. Ritchie, Senate historian and author of a book about the Washington press corps. "He had lived it, he had worked it and he had absorbed it. That added a layer to his broadcasting that was hard for somebody his junior to match."

Schorr's 20-year career as a foreign correspondent began in 1946. After serving in U.S. Army intelligence during World War II, he began writing from Western Europe for the Christian Science Monitor and later The New York Times, witnessing postwar reconstruction, the Marshall Plan and the creation of the NATO alliance.

3. We'll miss his perspective
The country today is poorer without the perspective of this individual who lived through a period of history most of us today have only read about.

6. So sad to hear...
...he is one of my heroes. RIP Daniel Schorr, you were a journalist who took his profession seriously and used it to present truth.

I have always taken to heart the admonition that he gave to his journalism students: "Governments lie".

Why yes, they do. In fact I've never met a government yet who did not! :-) Seriously, though, I have been paying attention to politics for nearly 50 years now (before that I was too young to care), and that one statement is something that we would all do well to keep in mind.

7. PM kick
When the old Repukes repeat the lie "liberal media bias", they are referring to Dan Schorr. Because he told the truth. The truth has a well known liberal bias.

He was a giant in his field. There is no equal today. Once, reporters like Schorr made up the reportage of this nation. They were drven out in the post-Nixon era when our nation's free press was destroyed.

8. Those were the days
Funny while I was watching Carl Bernstein school the Morning Joe crew this morning re 'Mr. Entitled Russert' gottcha journalism, I wondered about losing people who actually know about journalism.
