Washington Post has a great series on our intelligence spending...
and how it's all working-- not that well.

I've just been listening to the authors being interviewed on the Diane Rehm show

http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2010-07-21/us-national-security-complex

And it's some strange stuff, indeed.

Also, this morning I heard something on the radio about a Mexican drug cartel dressing a convenient corpse in a cop uniform and calling in their version of a 911 "cop shot".

When cops and EMS got there, someone remotely blew a car bomb killing and injuring many. One of the cartels took "credit" for this, explaining it was revenge for arresting one of their chiefs. The piece went on to mention that the cartels are using military tactics when the shooting starts.

So, we're spending hundreds of billions on "security" and we catch a guy trying to blow up his underwear on a plane, a grandmother or two with bad hearing, and some guy with a firecracker in Times Square. And there's the eternal hunt for the next #3 in al Qaeda while remotely bombing Pakistan to shreds.

Meanwhile, there are a bunch of guys right next door in Mexico with no political notions at all but who are up on the latest military training and explosives technology at war with the Mexican army, police, and who knows who else.

Is there something I'm missing, or is there a problem here?
