---the phrase that has been hammered into republicanspeak, its use is now apparently required in order to cast them in the presumptive role of spokespersons for a nation that is fully capable of speaking for itself (as we did quite nicely in spite of them in 2008). Boehner and McConnell are especially fond of presenting themselves as guardians of our best interests, in spite of their continuing record to the contrary.
Thus, the phrase now signals that they're fixing to tell us the next republican plan for screwing us over. As in:
"The American people don't want huge debt" = "We're gonna repeal health care reform."
"The American people want to pay for programs" = "We're gonna fuck over working people while giving tax breaks to the rich."
Et cetera, et cetera, et fucking cetera.
