"Ground Zero" Mosque
I read here on DU that the proposed Mosque / Community center is 2 blocks from the site of the Twin Towers? Is that correct?

Because in New York, two blocks might as well be two miles. My sister, who lived on West 23rd Street (Chelsea) insisted that the East Side was a myth for years because she had never been there except to occasionally drive to Queens.

Not that it matters to me one way or another where anyone wants to build the community center, but I get damned sick of people who wouldn't know Staten Island from Broadway using Sept 11 for political "red meat" while, in the next breath, implying that the people who, you know, actually live here, aren't "real" Americans.

I mean, fuck you too, Sarah. Really.

1. When did conservatives quit caring about property rights?
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 06:19 PM by glen123098
They are all about property rights when it comes to imminent domain, but when Muslims want to excercise their right to build a mosque on property they own, all of a sudden they are against it. Do Muslims not deserve property rights? If not, what constitutional basis is there for it?

2. It's not even a mosque. It's a community center with a prayer room in it. nt

5. Really? My friend has a dedicated pray room.
I wonder if her neighbors know that they have a Mosque on their street?

7. It's just so silly, isn't it? I mean, there are prayer rooms all over the place.
Makes you wonder what's wrong wtih people that they get so riled up over such trivial things.

4. That's a good point about the hypocrisy around property rights
As a religious minority myself, I gotta say that this bald faced Muslim baiting makes me extremely uncomfortable. OK - it makes me sick to my stomach, actually. Not the baiting even, since the stupid will always be with us, but the fact that more "leaders" don't stand up against it. Not cool. Not cool at all.

3. The notion that Moslems might be loyal Americans hurts their little heads.
These are the same people who claimed 50 years ago that JFK would take all his orders from the Vatican!

8. The building used to be a Burlington Coat Factory outlet...
...it closed down due to damage on 9/11 (landing gear from the 2nd plane smashed through the roof).

Look up 64 Park Pl., New York, NY on Google maps or any other map site.
