"it makes sense for the (Carly) Fiorinas to be a two-yacht family" says spokesperson
Boxer calls out Fiorina as multiple yacht owner
Phillip Matier,Andrew Ross

Monday, July 19, 2010

Sen. Barbara Boxer has fired a shot across the bow of Carly Fiorina - in the hopes that her Republican rival's ownership of a pair of yachts might sink her with voters.

Boxer has taken to comparing her years of "public service" to Fiorina's choice "to become a CEO, lay off 30,000 workers, ship jobs overseas (and) have two yachts."

Fiorina's 70-foot Alchemy V, a 2001 Dyna Craft valued for tax purposes at just over $1 million, is moored in Sausalito.

Her 56-foot Sea Ray yacht, the 3-year-old Alchemy VI, is docked on the Potomac in Washington, D.C. - not far from the Georgetown condo that Fiorina and her husband own.

Fiorina spokeswoman Julie Soderlund said it makes sense for the Fiorinas to be a two-yacht family, given that the boat-loving couple have divided their time between California and D.C., near where their grandchildren live.

6. I would agree that...
...it is a silly point.

However, the interesting part is how Fiorina's camp responded. In these difficult
economic times, you don't craft press messages that justify being a two-yacht family.

They could have deflected in numerous ways: Pointing out an extravagance that her opponent
has (and I'm sure there are many good examples), or take hold of the message and accuse
Boxer of being silly and focused on irrelevant issues when we're in serious times, etc.

They could have turned this around on Boxer or changed the subject.

Instead, they've added a day or two onto the yacht story and now they look like
fools for returning fire with, "but two yachts is reasonable!" LOL!

This could define Fiorina for a good duration of this campaign.

15. Agree that Fiorina response is horrible
I just hate the tactic used by Boxer because it's come to signifiy what politics in America is about...because it's certainly not about a candidate's qualifications and political platform anymore.

And FFS, we're talking about Fiorina here! Not like there aren't heaps of points to attack her on. Boxer (who's assets are also in the millions) attacking another person for being rich just seems silly because it's so easily reversable and honestly, among high-level politicians, kinda absurd, because they're all rich by middle-class standards. When you get into pissing matches over who has more yachts and millions of dollars, I couldn't possibly care less.

at them. I'm sick of rich, entitled Repukes buying our government offices by toppling career politicians, with their lies that their money can buy, who have worked very hard for the people. Go Babs. You've got my support. Throw every thing and the kitchen sink at that miserable failure.

10. But, it worked. Some rich people define their excess as necessities
as happened here. Bi-coastal large yachts are a bit much.

13. Compared to Fiorina, Boxer's net worth is minimal
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 04:24 PM by KingFlorez
It's not lame when you have a candidate spending ridiculous amounts of money to buy a Senate seat and claim that they are the right choice. Extravagance equals out of touch.

18. I don't agree
They both have assets in the millions and when you get to that level you're arguing semantics. Both of them make more money in a year than I'll make in 20. Fiorina may have a shitton of money but as far as I'm concerned, so does Boxer. When you have piles and piles of disposable wealth pointing out that someone else has even MORE disposable wealth and therefore is "bad" is just ridiculous.

2. OMG...who is running the Fiorina campaign...
...wild monkeys?

First, we had the weird sheep ad. Now, her "spokesperson" is justifying and explaining why it's fine and
dandy to be a "two-yacht family." Cuz yeah, now the people in Rio Linda will understand.

I think one of the best kept secrets in America today is that Fiorina is dumber than Palin.

22. Behind the scenes, rumors through Barbara Boxer's
website are that Karl Rove is behind the scenes so don't be so complacent until after the November election. The sheep ad was done before he is rumored to have signed on.

3. I have only one home, so it would make sense for me to be a one yacht family, right?
At least according to that logic.

Sooo... Where's my one yacht?

8. Isn't your yacht dry docked with mine?
We were supposed to have the dining room crystal chandeliers polished today.

You wouldn't really set sail with dingy lighting now would you?

I know it's tough being part of the upper .0000099 percent in America today, but please don't make us all look bad
with your lackluster crystals!

7. This explains a lot...
http://www.wilsonmillercom.com/about/bio/Julie_Soderlund.html

Before joining Wilson-Miller Communications, Inc. in 2007, Julie served as an advisor to the Office of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and as communications director for the Governor's 2007 Inaugural Committee. Prior to that, she was press secretary for Governor Schwarzenegger's successful 2006 re-election campaign.

Julie began working for Governor Schwarzenegger in 2003 as assistant press secretary and later as deputy press secretary in his state office. She joined the Administration after two years as an account executive at the Sacramento-based public relations firm CommandFocus. At CommandFocus, Julie provided public affairs and communications support for a wide array of clients including state and local political campaigns, corporations and trade associations.

Prior to pursing a career in politics and communications, Julie spent a year living and working in Mexico City and served as an analyst for the Lafayette Exchange Corporation, a Bay Area-based boutique financial services firm.

Wilson-Miller... hmmm... Wilson-Miller... why is that name so familiar to me? This isn't the same firm that set up the Tea Party Express with their buses, etc., is it?

16. It also makes sense for average Americans to hate the Fiorina family.
Yet, when you counter the "let them eat cake" mindset with hatred, they just never, ever understand why you hate them. They actually believe they're special and that they "earned" what they have.

20. Yes it does -- and that sense SHOULD shoot her down with the voting public.
Hey, it also makes sense for BP to play fast and loose with oil-drilling safety, playing the odds that nothing will blow up. Just as it makes sense for BP to use its power and resources to duck as much cost and flak as possible when its negligence does blow up, killing workers and destroying the ecology of a major region. And such sense should be negatively sanctioned by both criminal and civil law, as well as by the court of public opinion.

But in the case of Two-Yacht Fiorina, the nonsensical sense of her political philosophy as well as her two-yacht lifestyle need only be negatively sanctioned in the voting booth.

21. Yuck
I guess the Sea Ray is an, eh, ok looking boat for a fiberglass rig but the Dyna Craft is just a garish looking hunk of plastic IMO.

If I ever found myself sufficiently fat in cash from the lottery or something like that, I'd much rather go with something like fully restored mid 60s Chris Craft Constellation. 65 feet of classic painted, finely lacquered and polished wood....now that's class ;)

Sure that's mean because it attacks a kids show ... but it also leads to the HP outsourcing history, which Carly should wear around he next every second of every day in the election period.

27. Her campaign makes a valid point
You can't really expect them to have their servants sail the California yacht to DC while they fly there on their private jet. They would miss too much of the yachting season waiting for those slow servants to sail it through the Panama Canal. It is getting hard to find good servants these days.
