2. I think nationalism is taken more negatively.
But both can be positive and negative. Like most other human ideas.

I personally think patriotism is better then nationalism. Because patriotism doesn't have to include comparisons to other countries. I think nationalism does for the most part.

6. Nationalism turns devotion to the nation into principles or programmes.
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 12:51 PM by Ozymanithrax
It thus contains a different dimension to mere patriotism, which can be devotion to one's country or nation devoid of any project for political action.
***SNIP***
The general featur of universal principles of nationalism is an assetion of tthe primacy of national identity over humanity in general.
***SNIP***
The economic dimension of such nationalism is the belief that the ownership and control ofimportant resources shoud be maintained firmly within the naiton itself. The political applicaiton is the principle of selfdetermination which seeks to base political life on the nation-stante, a soverign entity dominated by a single nation.

From the Oxford Concise Dictionary of POlitics by Iain McLean pgs 334-336

Pariotism has always been defined as love of one's country or zeal in the defensece of the interest of on'es country. Patriotism as such does not necessitate a programme of action: it stimulates and informs nationalism, but is no always nationalistic.

7. I see them as synonymous
From a non-American perspective I do get a strong vibe of "Americans are patriots, everyone else are just nationalists," occasionally stated explicitly like that.

It's kind of like "ethnic groups" versus "tribes," or any number of other we-and-theyings.

8. Here is the difference:
Patriotism is when you love your country.
Nationalism is when you hate other countries.
