Glenn Beck Tells Audience He Might Be Going Blind
During a tearful and passionate speech at his "American Revival" meeting in Salt Lake City on Saturday, Fox News host Glenn Beck revealed that he may be going blind.

During his speech (video below), Beck told the audience, "I can't focus my eyes."

Taking a shot at health care reform, Beck said, "I went to the best doctor I could find, while I could still go to the best doctor I can find."

Beck, 46, says he has been diagnosed with macular dystrophy, and joked that the doctor told him, "You could go blind in the next year . . . or you might not."

http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/07/19/glenn-beck-i-might-be-going-blind/

I was almost going to feel sorry for him if this is true and he is not hyping - but then he still had to take a shot at Obama and health care.

Frankly Mr Beck I don't give a damn.

Well, Glennie will probably sue Vicks for not putting a warning on the label: "Caution: Using this product under your eyes to produce fake tears while you're ranting incoherently on your teevee program could result in damage to your eyes. Not to mention the Republic. Don't do it, asswipe."

13. It's the same as with cheney.
There are only a few people that I cannot muster any compassion for, and cheney and Beck are two of them. It's not because they both have dangerous levels of paranoia (no law against that), but because they have used their power and reach to spread their lethal fears to so many millions of others, to the detriment of the nation. If that doesn't make them traitors, it at least makes them enemies of the state. As such, they are exempt from my compassion.

14. BTW here's Wikipedia on macular dystrophy
Vitelliform macular dystrophy or vitelliform dystrophy is a genetic eye disorder that can cause progressive vision loss. This disorder affects the retina, specifically cells in a small area near the center of the retina called the macula. The macula is responsible for sharp central vision, which is needed for detailed tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

Vitelliform macular dystrophy causes a fatty yellow pigment (lipofuscin) to build up in cells underlying the macula. Over time, the abnormal accumulation of this substance can damage cells that are critical for clear central vision. As a result, people with this disorder often lose their central vision and may experience blurry or distorted vision. Vitelliform macular dystrophy does not affect side (peripheral) vision or the ability to see at night.

Researchers have described two forms of vitelliform macular dystrophy with similar features. The early-onset form (known as Best disease) usually appears in childhood; however, the onset of symptoms and the severity of vision loss vary widely. The adult-onset form begins later, usually in middle age, and tends to cause relatively mild vision loss. The two forms of vitelliform macular dystrophy each have characteristic changes in the macula that can be detected during an eye examination.

Best disease is inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, which means one copy of the altered gene in each cell is sufficient to cause the disorder. In most cases, an affected person has one parent with the condition.

The inheritance pattern of adult-onset vitelliform macular dystrophy is uncertain. Some studies have suggested that it may be inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern. Many affected people, however, have no history of the disorder in their family and only a small number of affected families have been reported.

59.  I'm assuming he has the adult-onset form and according to your article...
"The adult-onset form begins later, usually in middle age, and tends to cause relatively mild vision loss."

Seems like quite a jump from mild loss to potential blindness, eh?

Quite frankly, I don't know enough about this condition to comment.

Does anybody have any expertise to add?

52. Dreckk phishing for sympathy
While lacking any real compassion for those less fortunate than he is (hint: 95% of us), and as if his wealth cannot buy the best medical care available.

"while I could still go to the best doctor I can find."

What a load of BS, who or what is going to prevent Dreckkk from going to any doctor of his choice? He has enough money to go w/o health insurance coverage, and pay all of his bills in cash, even if they were to reach seven figures, unlike millions in this country that are uninsured or under-insured. Many have serious pre-existing conditions that won't be covered, even if they could afford the cost of private insurance premiums.

Fact is, the reason that most conservatives don't want single-payer, is because they believe that only socialist liberals would benefit, and they would soon lose the ability to choose the doctors clinics, and hospitals that they can go to, since we libs all are jobless, shiftless, and lazy pocket-pickers of those hard-working right-wingers. This despite the fact that HMOs and PPOs now being popular and commonplace. So what would happen if their aging parents who are now dependent upon Medicare "entitlements" were instead to lose them? Since their parents are no longer productive members of society, they must now be "disposable".

Sorry Mom and Dad!!

(I have read many posts on some open forums in the past from young(er) right-wingers who actually have replied that they no longer want to pay FICA taxes, so that their parents can continue to have Medicare coverage. How compassionately conservative of them!!)

56. cry me a river, bunky. My father lost his sight 25 years ago to a
rare disorder, and he was 10 thousand times the man that Glenn Beck will ever DREAM of being. Maybe he'll learn what it's like to be 'different' in this society. ( and yes, I know he is quite different already but you folks know what I mean) Next he'll be whining about being treated unfairly because he has a disability....and he still won't see his own hypocrisy in it........douche bag!

62. If Beck is going blind he should thank his lucky stars he's rich enough for the best health care
That pisses me off about Carly Fiorina. She brags about how she battled breast cancer and won. Of course she won - she's got a gazillion dollars to her name and can afford the very best of treatments in this world.

But for the rest of us going blind or fighting breast cancer we have to fight the health care system and hope for the best.

83. A bit more on story
Glenn Beck dropped quite the bombshell on a Salt Lake City audience over the weekend, revealing that he's been diagnosed with macular dystrophy, a slowly progressive eye disorder that can cause blindness.

He said that he went to a doctor because he "can't focus my eyes."

He joked that he went to a LensCrafters first, and that the guy there told him: "Woa, you might be going blind!"

When his doctor told him he had macular dystrophy, Beck said, "Is that that Jerry Lewis thing?"

He also joked that the doctor wasn't much help, telling him: "You could go blind in the next year . . . or you might not."

Skip to 6:23 to hear him talk about his condition.

... BecKKKerhead will be going blind for the next twenty years.

Check back in twenty years or so and his vision won't be any worse.

If he would just keep the Vick's away from his eyes he'd be alright.

If he was really diagnosed with macular dystrophy, it may take years for total blindness.

Beck is already blind!

He will claim to going blind and then have everyone pray for him then he will come out and say he is better and the doctors are baffled!

Been down this road many times before as Christians like to claim "MIRACLES".

91. CBS has picked up the story
Liberals might believe that Glenn Beck has been blind all along, but now the television talk show host says that he is suffering from macular dystrophy and may actually lose his sight.

"A couple of weeks ago I went to the doctor because of my eyes, I can't focus my eyes," he said to a Salt Lake City crowd on Saturday. "He did all kinds of tests and he said, 'you have macular dystrophy ...you could go blind in the next year. Or, you might not.'"

The often comedic Beck fired back, "Did you just charge me a thousand dollars for knowing what I knew my whole life?"

Vitelliform macular dystrophy is a genetic eye disorder which causes vision loss over time by disrupting cells in a small area near the center of the retina which is responsible for sharp central vision. A more aggressive version can strike during childhood. Either form can make it hard to recognize faces, read and drive.
