Vitter Apologizes To Rachel Maddow
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/2010/07/happy_hour_roundup_51.html

* Senator David Vitter is apologizing to Rachel Maddow for suggesting she only looked like a woman "a long time ago." Vitter's office sends over the note of apology he's written to the talk show host:

Dear Rachel,

Regarding my remark during a radio conversation today, I apologize.

The hosts made their comment and I obviously chimed in. While we do not usually agree on the issues, I do not think you deserved that comment.

Sincerely,

David

UPDATE, 10:10 a.m.: Rachel Maddow has accepted Senator Vitter's apology. I'm told she replied to him with the following note:

Dear Senator Vitter --

As a former radio host who knows how on-air exchanges like that can escalate, I both understand how it happened, and appreciate the apology.

Thank you.

Best wishes,

Rachel

1. I don't know if I could be that gracious.

A remark like that certainly must have hurt her, even though there's no truth to it.

That said, accepting the apology was a classy move and exactly the right thing to do. It puts her above the argument but, in my mind, doesn't make Vitter appear any less petty or childish.

4. "must have hurt her" ??? Have you heard her describe herself ?
I agree that she is gracious to accept the apology, but I've heard her describe her "usual" off-air self as looking like a geeky boy with goofy t-runners, jeans and t-shirt, no makeup, and big geeky glasses. She herself used the boyish reference, so I doubt it hurt her much, unless it was to remind her that she used to be hung up on the pressure to look like a girl.

7. It's one thing to describe yourself in a certain way,
but Vitter's remark was obviously meant to be a negative remark about her appearance. Also, his remark could be taken as a slam against lesbians.

I could be mistaken but I would think that she took some offense to it.

8. Well she sure doesn't strike me as that kind of a ninny. She's a realist if nothing
else and if she didn't want to be seen as she is, she wouldn't present herself as she does, nor speak of herself as she does. I think your implication that her feelers were hurt would be more insulting than what Vitter said. I know it would be to me, for you to imply that I would have feelings hurt by someone like Vitter would just be so insulting. It makes her sound like a wimp or weakling, and I sure don't see her as that and as you can tell, I'm quite upset that you would demean her obvious strength and personal power that way.

9. Excuse me.
Jeeze, now I'm the one being insulting?

Human beings have feelings. That doesn't make them "wimps" or "weaklings" or "ninnies". I can't even believe we're arguing about this. :eyes:

You could be right. Maybe she wasn't phased by it, but it's not insulting to think that she might have been.

I'm bowing out of this sub-thread. It's not even worth the time.

10. Hmmph
Rachal is too nice.

Vitter's excuse basically is that it's the radio hosts fault that they were making derogatory comments and he felt obligated to one up them?
Is that what I am hearing? Really Pathetic for a supposedly grown man.

11. I wanna see the motherfucker groveling on his hands & knees, IN A DIAPER.
I'd suggest Rachel stand before him in full dominatrix regalia, but that would just give the slimeball an excuse to get his rocks off!
