4. Bubbles.
Bubbles of what is thought to be nitrates or methane. They supposedly took a sample to the top and we'll see if that was true and they give out what the bubbles are. It's not oil, it's white bubbles.

Edited on Sun Jul-18-10 09:20 PM by HughMoran
Implying that oil may be filling undersea cavities through breaks in the bore lining. All I can say is, they can't get that relief well intercepted in there fast enough. I know they are literally hours away from testing to see if the outer liner has been breached, but they aren't going to tell us how it's going until they have successfully broken into the main bore.

10. This shows the bubbles and there is some sort of monitor connected
to the ROV arm...I read that at TOD or I'd have never known what it was. The bubbles look like rain on this image, but they are coming up steady...Skandi ROV2. I had to shrink the pic to make it palatable to the site.

20. The same way he ordered up the ROV cams. All BP has to do is
take the cap off and connect a riser pipe. Then the flow can be measured.

But, I NEVER WILL BE.

16. Danger Will Robinson Danger
The bickering between the know it alls, upon whom the fate of the Gulf depends, is getting comical. Admiral Thad is wanting to use the capture procedure, BP wants the well kept closed, BP also has come up with another kill method called "Static kill, or "bullheading" is pumping mud from the top of a shut-in well at even higher pressures, forcing the oil back into formation. It is likely the highest risk approach." (from TOD http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6753#comment-682490 )

So who knows. There is small leakage around the old stuff right below the new transition pipe, but not much. But they say this means stress. Some say they have to let the flow go for 3 days to get the sand etc out of the oil (and the equipment) before they can use top contain, others say hook it up in a couple hours. I really think nobody knows jack and they are all just waiting...either for something to happen or the relief well to be ready.

Leaks on the new BOP this morning:

19. Lots of options right now.
Diverdan on July 20, 2010 - 10:37am

In these situations the plans are dictated by the data. Not having a flexible strategy or moving along with only one scenario would be foolhardy.
They have been following multiple scenario paths since the beginning and set up equipment that can be used/modified for different paths if they are taken.

http://www.theoildrum.com/node/6754#comments_top

So they do know jack....and they are busy. They have contingency plans and are looking constantly to see which is the best way to go. There is so much to take into consideration, so many things to bring into each decision.

22. Today I learned a few things.......
This is what a seep looks like, no it's not from the Macondo. So we'll know what to look for:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4S9uazWAB0

Also there are 6 tiny leaks around, on the BOPs, old and new, and none are a threat. They say they can be from the oil cooling. The one the ROV is sitting watching is so small it doesn't leak like the video above shows.

And then I found this at TOD:

Sounds like the relief well may be ready to cut through this weekend...and there are possible storms in the Gulf. We'll see, they were calling in smaller boats today.

Soooo maybe they'll be able to get back to the kill and get the relief well zeroed in to the Macondo and get this done. I don't know if the static kill is still a go either...we shall see.

29. Rigs and ships are moving back to the DWH site.
Drilling will resume asap on the relief well. Not sure about the static kill or if they'll wait for the RW to be done, which it is close and cementing and mud fill will start as soon as they tap the wild well.

August should see the well killed, the end of the threat and the beginning of the real clean up and assessment of what the long term damages will be to the Gulf area.

30. New Oil Containment System
Meanwhile this 'spill' has gotten the other oil companies off their collective asses and they are moving on new technology to be readily available if there should be another well blowout.

New Oil Spill Containment System Planned by Chevron, Conoco Phillips, ExxonMobil, and Shell

According to the Overview:

This system offers key advantages to the current response equipment in that it will be pre-engineered, constructed, tested and ready for rapid deployment in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. Its primary objective is to fully contain the oil with no flow to the sea. The system will be flexible and adaptable. It will be responsive to a wide range of potential scenarios, deepwater depths up to 10,000 feet, weather conditions and flow rates exceeding the size and scope of the current spill. Once constructed, the system components will be fully tested to ensure functionality and will be maintained in a state of continuous operational readiness. In the event of a future incident, mobilization to the field will start within days and the system will be fully operational within weeks.

32. From Monday's press briefing...
Current estimated time line for RW, static kill and bottom kill:
RW:
- latch on to well today
- today through Wed, retrieve storm packer, pick up drill pipe, circulate to clean bore, etc
- Wed begin running 2,000' feet of casing.. finish Sat, Sun with cementing

Static kill:
- Begin Monday, 8/2, dependent on cementing of RW casing (he said earlier that the static kill could begin before the cement was completely set)
- mud will be coming from Q4000, via the kill line on the old BOP

Bottom kill:
- drilling of the final 100' could progress during the static kill
- bottom kill could begin 5-7 days after static kill

35. Wow you're alive!
LOL for days I've been the only one here. I was at work so missed that post, but I did just find this at TOD:

ROCKMAN on July 31, 2010 - 9:56am
FOR ALL

At the end of the previous thread: Relief well collapses. The well bore did not collapse. Even in the captioned video they don’t say that. There was “debris” in the bottom 40’ of the hole. Debris is a very loaded word. It was sand and mud. When you POOH there is always a certain amount of “sloughing“ or as we call it “fill up“. It’s often caused by pulling the drill pipe out of the hole: it scrapes the sides and knocks some of the rock loose. The standard procedure when going back to bottom is to “ream” the last 100’ or so to clean out the fill. It wouldn't take the estimated 24 hours to just clean out the fill either. It’s also standard procedure to circulate the mud around a number of times to make sure it’s uniform and all the fill has been removed. The round trip time for mud at this depth would be around 6-8 hours.

A side educational note since we talking mud cleaning: As the mud gets back to the surface it passes thru the “shakers”: large vibrating horizontal screen panels that separate the cuttings from the mud. Typically one of the loudest spots on a rig. I’ve spent thousands of hours at the shaker watching returns. Double ear protection is highly recommended.

I think I'm gonna go read yesterdays thread there and see what's up. I don't know if that's what was posted in the thread you mentioned.

42. Wed. morning update:
Subsea operational update:

The MC252 well has been shut-in since July 15; there is currently no oil flowing into the Gulf.

As a result of performing the static kill procedure the well appears to have reached a static condition, with the well pressure now being controlled by the hydrostatic pressure of the drilling mud. This was the desired outcome.

The relief well being drilled by the DDIII is currently running in the hole with drill pipe and will expect to perform the required BOP test later today.

We anticipate the next update will be provided at around 9:30am CDT on August 5, 2010.

Updated August 4 at 9:30am CDT

http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_internet/globalbp/globalbp_uk_english/incident_response/STAGING/local_assets/html/Skandi_ROV1.html

Edited on Wed Aug-04-10 09:31 PM by jaxx
This is the pic taken just now and there is no leaking oil drops from the same place we've seen leaking for the past weeks since they stopped the actual flow into the GoM. As of now there are no more drops leaking....which hopefully means the static kill has stopped the well. Cementing is still up in the air, but I betcha they try it. The RW will still be used to do the final bottom kill around Aug. 15th.
